Iceland is slowing down its accession to the EU and proposes a referendum for August 29th.

Iceland is proposing a referendum on resuming negotiations for accession to the European Union. Foreign Minister Katrín Gunnarsdóttir has presented a motion for a referendum to be held on August 29th. This is reported by the state broadcaster Ruv. The draft resolution will be submitted to parliament’s approval next week. Prime Minister Kristrún Mjöll Frostadóttir stated that the referendum would only decide on the reopening of negotiations with the EU, while the final agreement would then be subject to a further vote by the people. The model would offer a “double safety valve,” allowing citizens to express their support for talks to explore available options, without however committing to accession.

The Prime Minister also emphasized that Iceland is in a “completely different position” than when it submitted its application in 2009, and has a much stronger negotiating position. Minister Gunnarsdóttir stated that if the referendum were to prove positive, negotiations could resume towards the end of the year and would primarily focus on the most difficult issues relating to natural resources. Icelandic leaders have also expressed concern about potential foreign interference in the referendum. According to Ruv, the Gallup poll, conducted between the end of February and the beginning of March, found that 57% of Icelanders are in favor of resuming talks, while just over 30% are opposed and 12% are undecided.

Speaking of #Gremlins. I recently heard a #Danish person mentioning the movie and he called it "Gremlings". A web-search reveals that this spelling is quite common on .dk-domains.

This was something #Icelanders did and I suspect we can blame the Danes since this was during a period when Icelanders still read a lot of Danish magazines (including film-magazines) and I imagine films were distributed to #Iceland through #Denmark.

"#Guðni is distantly related to former US president #BarackObama: they are 24th cousins 8 times removed. The connection is through Obama's Scottish ancestry, but since almost all #Icelanders can trace themselves to bishop Gottskálk grimmi Nikulásson they are all distantly related to #Obama."

Of all the awful food that #Icelanders have been forced to eat to keep themselves alive in the last thousand years there are few worse than putrefied skate.

In the Western Fjords of #Iceland (the outline of Iceland is a sheep, WF is the head) there was this tradition of eating skate at the end of the Yule-Fast (December 23rd).

Something shifted when I was growing up and this became a national tradition. Which is bad because the smell, the smell, it is awful.

In case anyone is wondering how fun it is to live in Iceland, avalanche fell on a small town on the east coast of Iceland and blizzard condition are making rescue operations challenging. Luckily no one was seriously injured or killed. Several folks no longer have a livable house though and the entire town has been evacuated for fear of more avalanches.
Few nearby towns have also been cleared for the same reason. Yes it's currently spring in Iceland.
In the capital on the other hand, which is on the west coast, the weather is cool but sunny and nice.
