Oh look: The Shingles Vaccine seems to help prevent dementia. It makes sense, herpes viruses can damage the brain by causing encephalitis or meningitis (I confuse those a lot so I don’t remember I’m sorry) so it makes sense that this could protect the brain.

“Question  What is the effect of herpes zoster vaccination on the probability of receiving a new diagnosis of dementia?
Findings  In this quasi-experimental study using electronic health record data from Australia, being eligible for herpes zoster vaccination based solely on date of birth significantly decreased the probability of receiving a new dementia diagnosis during 7.4 years by 1.8 percentage points.
Meaning  By taking advantage of a quasi-experiment, this study provides evidence for a beneficial effect of herpes zoster vaccination for preventing or delaying dementia that is more likely to be causal than the associations reported in the existing correlational evidence.”

Update on my pneumonia and shingles vaccine!

Last night I started to feel tired early, and realized that might be side effects. I've been fatigued since then, but haven't slept great. I got up a lot last night to pee.

I'm loving this infrared thermometer! I've had a borderline fever (98.8-99.5) since about midnight. I'm sore in various places, and have had chills at least once.

I'm also appreciating my employer's generous policy on sick leave - we can use it for vaccine side effects!

Last night my fever and fatigue subsided. I'm still feeling a little tired, and some discomfort at the injection site, but I think I'm basically over these pneumonia and shingles vaccinations!

Tuesday, 4pm: Injections
Tuesday, 9pm: fatigue
Wednesday, 3am: intermittent fever, aches
Wednesday, 6pm: last fever breaks
Wednesday, 9pm: fatigue subsides
Thursday, 11am: lingering discomfort at injection site, and mild fatigue

Spoke too soon! Around 1pm the vaccine side effects started to come back, and eventually my temperature was over 101. I took another couple Advil and lay down for the afternoon, and now I'm feeling better.

I should have spent the morning resting instead of trying to go back to work. Anyway, I'll probably be fine tomorrow!

I decided to compare the common side effects for the pneumonia and shingles vaccine. They both cause redness, tenderness and swelling at the injection site; chills, fever, headache, muscle aches and fatigue.

The difference seems to be the pneumonia vaccine can cause fussiness, joint pain and loss of appetite, while the shingles vaccine can cause nausea and stomach pain.

The only one of these I haven't had is nausea. Irritability is preexisting.

Woke up today and most of my vaccine side effects were gone! Just a little bit of headache, fatigue and injection site soreness.

That was good because I had a big day! My sister came to visit me and our mother, so I guided her to the nursing home, got a pass for Mom to go to the park and picked up some lunch and snacks. Later we went back to go through some of Mom's old things.

I'm feeling pretty tired now, but hopefully will be fine in the morning!

@abetterjulie Turns out it is a Zewa 11110 v2! I bought it for my mother, I think at a local pharmacy using her Medicare OTC card. I love how the camera module rotates so that I can take my own temperature or someone else's without contorting my hand!
