Felt like a wet rag*, but in a good way -and only for a couple of hours. I just got three vaccines (flu, COVID, and shingles) in 48 hours. Flu was free, the other two mostly covered by insurance.

In two weeks I'll be ready for the next school term to start!

Previous studies have already pointed to a potential link between the shingles vaccine and dementia protection, but all of them were weakened by the fact that those who get vaccinated tend to also lead healthier lives in general (so their protection from dementia may have come from elsewhere).

But in this study, that bias wasn’t such a problem. That’s because the vaccination programme was only eligible to a specific group of people: those who were 79 years old on 1 September 2013.

“We know that if you take a thousand people at random born in one week, and a thousand people at random born a week later, there shouldn’t be anything different about them on average,”...

A dementia vaccine could be real, and some of us have taken it without knowing | BBC Science Focus Magazine

Getting vaccinated against shingles could protect you from getting dementia, or slow the progression of the disease, says a new study.

You only need to get the RSV shot once.

Quote from the notice linked below:

"The RSV vaccine is not currently an annual vaccine, meaning people do not need to get a dose every RSV season. Eligible adults can get an RSV vaccine at any time, but the best time to get vaccinated is in late summer and early fall before RSV usually starts to spread in communities."

See: https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2024/s-0626-vaccination-adults.html

I got my RSV shot a couple of years ago; get a flu & Covid shot annually; and got 2 variants of the Shingles vax (Shingrix & Zostavax) & 3 variants of the Pneumonia vax (PCV 15, 20 & 21) previously.

There's a 4th type of pneumonia vax (PPSV23) that was most recently released.

Asked my PCP about it & he said I didn't need it, since I got the other 3 already but, from what I've read, PPSV23 covers some things the others didn't. So, I'm still thinking about getting it too.

My ex developed shingles in one eye in her twenties. It was painful and while she has to take anti-virals daily for the rest of her life, she still gets flare-ups in times of stress. I wouldn't wish shingles on anybody.

The twelve month window is a weird and arbitrary division. I had my shot at 65 but my friend Greg missed out and had to pay full price. People forget or just don't get around to it.

Whichever age is picked, and 65 seems high to me, it should remain available to all who haven't already had the shot. Your 50+ sounds good to me. You'd also expect that approach to save the health system money in the long run.

“The shingles vaccine is the best thing that ever happened to me. She just lays in bed sketching stuff and listening to audiobooks. She even scooted over so I can take the right side the way I like. She gave me a bite of breakfast and she’s got the chills so I’m required to stay very close. I hope she gets many more shingles vaccines. One a week would be ideal. This is the best. I love vaccines. Vaccines save lives. Get your shingles vaccine!”
