Seated statue of Dainichi Nyorai, Renko-in, Mie, #Japan, #Heian period. Made of a single piece of cypress. The area from the elbows to the front of the knees belongs to later generations. Both hands are tied in a sign of wisdom. Sitting in a prone position. It looks like it was originally painted, but most of it has peeled off.

#ScribesAndMakers If your creative work could speak, what would it say about you?

And what's this with the poetry in your stories? It started as quoted song lyrics, and now there are whole chapters where characters exchange renga and kkatauta. Yes, I know the #Heian and #Edo periods, and the narrator explains it, but do you think readers want this level of realism?

#AizenMyōō (愛染明王) dating to the #Heian period (794-1185) at the Shunjōdō Hall (俊乗堂) of Tōdai-ji in Nara, #Japan.

#Maitreya #Bodhisattva Statue, Jion-ji, #Japan. This temple was founded by the priest Brahmon on the orders of Emperor Shomu. During the Edo period, it received over 2,000 koku of stamps from the shogunate and flourished as one of the largest temples in the Tohoku region. Cultural properties that trace the flow of #Kyoto's aristocratic culture, such as treasures from the late #Heian period to the Muromachi period, rival those of Hiraizumi Chuson-ji.

Another chapter down. One more chapter (I hope) and an epilogue to soften the rather violent ending of this series. #AmWriting

Then I need to reread "The Tale of Genji" and read "Gossamer Years" for the first time to start getting a handle on home life for a rural #Heian noblewoman.

New eyes to pick out new material.

Seated wooden #Bishamonten Statue, Seiryo-ji, #Japan. Believed to have been created in the late #Heian period. This is unusual for an image of #Bishamonten in which he is seated with his left leg pressed down. This #Buddhist statue was relatively undervalued, and was designated as an important cultural property in 2009.
