KenSide perspective of the giant Buddha statue at the Todai-ji Temple—an amazing work of art. I particularly like the hand. The statue was completed in the year 751. That's just incredible to think about!

The final photo (for now at least) from my recent trip to Japan. In the town of Uji is the historic Byodo-in Temple, a Japanese national treasure. The temple was built in 1053 and houses a Buddha statue from that era. The building is so treasured, that it appears on the 10 yen coin. The temple and its gardens are so beautiful. I liked the framing of the temple between the trees with the reflection in the water below.

Liao dynasty gilt silver funerary mask served as a burial artifact delicately placed to shroud the countenance of Khitan nobles in their passage into eternity. Capital Museum #Beijing. In 1971, this gilt silver mask was excavated from the Jinling Site in Fangshan District, Beijing. Wher it was first unearthed, there were still strings threaded through the ears, indicating that it should have been worn on the face of the deceased.
Seated statue of Dainichi Nyorai, Renko-in, Mie, #Japan, #Heian period. Made of a single piece of cypress. The area from the elbows to the front of the knees belongs to later generations. Both hands are tied in a sign of wisdom. Sitting in a prone position. It looks like it was originally painted, but most of it has peeled off.
