#FDA Commissioner #MartyMakary was on one of weekend news programs, where he was asked about decision to limit pregnant people's access to #COVIDvaccines. Host mentioned that aggregation of studies involving a total of over 1.8M had shown #vaccine was safe and effective.
Makary dismissed all that data because it wasn't "#GoldStandardScience," perfectly illustrating how phrase can be used as a tool to mislead public.

Sadly easy to see that this emphasis on "gold-standard science" by the US administration is just the latest and more plausible-sounding version of "Do your own research" - a blatant attempt to use the inherent scepticism of genuine science as a weapon against science itself. No good can come from anti-science ideologues cherry-picking ideas from research integrity and taking them out of context.

COS Statement on “Restoring Gold Standard Science” Executive Order

The Executive Order issued on May 23, 2025, Restoring Gold Standard Science, references several open science practices championed by COS and the open science and metascience communities more generally. Ordinarily, such prominent promotion of these practices would be cause for COS to celebrate advancement of its mission. Unfortunately, their application in this Executive Order is counterproductive for open science’s purpose to accelerate discovery, advance treatments, and create knowledge.
