I keep fresh fruit on hand to eat, juice and use as garnishes but, since I am the only one consuming them, more often than I would like, they go bad. I decided to dehydrate a bunch of fruit and seal it in air lock bags as a hedge against this. Here I have lemons, limes, oranges, blood oranges, kiwi and pear. The kiwi is great for snacking as the seeds give it a pleasant crunch. The pears are a delicious addition to my ginger pear martinis. #fruit #dehydrated #garnish #preservation

This has been on my reshake list forever and I finally got around to it! In December 2024 I went to Mothership, a space-themed tiki bar in San Diego with Star Trek TOS vibes that I just loved. At the bar it came in a Nachtmann crystal glass and specifically named Stroh, an Austrian rum. Both are really easy to get in my area, so I vowed to remake it.

The spec proportions are my best guess, but I think I landed pretty close and it tasted great. I went a step further with the Stroh and used a barspoon to cover the dehydrated orange for a flaming boost to warp speed! The original had a candied orange instead of dehydrated (see second pic to compare).

Dirty Martini + Negroni. A pretty common riff whose origin I couldn't definitively track down. I came up with it independently when brainstorming Negroni riffs, but having looked online it's no surprise that many, many folks had this idea before I stumbled upon it.

SHUDDERS IN A WHISPER

¾ oz lime juice
½ oz passion fruit syrup
½ oz pear liqueur
¼ oz Drambuie
2 oz seltzer
2 oz Column Still Aged Rum ❹
2 dashes Peychauds bitters
1 dash Angostura bitters

It's really getting cold here, so my solution is to flash blend drinks and pretend I'm somewhere tropical 😎 This one comes from the Smuggler's Cove book, page 118. I made it because I was trying to use pear liqueur, and it really blends nicely with the Drambuie, with the rum playing second fiddle.

I have some leftovers from Negroni week on my shake list that never got made 😋 If I made any adjustment, I would swap out Campari for a less bracingly bitter amaro. My cold brew was already pretty mild to begin with but I found this a bit too bitter to be refreshing.

I was in San Diego last year and visited Youngblood, a speakeasy inside a speakeasy... they know how to be hip in SD! Anyway, at the time they had no menu; the bartender would just get your vibe for each of three rounds. This was my "boozy" round 2, where I gave him a prompt of cognac. 2 oz apple brandy

I have a huge planter full of cinnamon basil and thought it would play well as a warming spice in this autumn-style old fashioned. What’s more, my pumpkin syrup was generously spiced, adding hints of clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, and ginger.

We had some guests last weekend and one of them made a pumpkin dessert that started out as a pumpkin oleo saccharum. I saved a chunk of the leftovers, threw a bunch of spices in, and worked it into a syrup.
