Is there a tool like QuadSpinner's Gaea that will take a greyscale height map and apply erosion to it, but for non-Windows computers?
I'm looking for something that maybe could be used in a high school science classroom, therefore, extra credit for:
- Free
- Open Source
- Handling 2:1 aspect ratio (such as a global equirectangular map)
- relatively simple to use
Just read that John Varley, who I've long considered my favourite sci-fi author, died a few days ago. His early output - the Gaea trilogy and early Eight Worlds stuff, up to and including Steel Beach (1992) - was incredible. He wrote slowly after that, but it was all quite good.
If you have never read Varley, give him a shot.

Something on my todo list is to feed that kind of flawed or relatively low resolution data into #Gaea, and see if I can make it look better.
The new one wouldn't be accurate, but things like small scale thermal erosion should make it look a LOT better, while keeping the overall shape.
