For those interested in solar energy and home automation…

I've been running a gadget to heat my domestic water (immersion heater) only with spare power from my solar panels. It's a rather "boutique"-made thingumy by a guy here in Spain using an open design (#freeds). Magic.

But.

The gadget has become flaky & needs frequent reboots.

Conclusion - cheaper and easier to just set a simple time switch to switch on the immersion heater for 2 hours at midday.

@jago @gnarf Ah yes, more interesting variables: electricity pricing & automation. Looks like you have a pretty wild day / night spread on your electricity tariff, there! My tariff is 40¢ day, 20¢ in the small hours & weekends. My #freeds automation for resistive water heating varies the power fed to the heating element according to the excess solar power available. With a heat pump it would need to be either on or off.
