In other words: I do maps on websites, maintaining the Leaflet JS library when I can, but working on Gleo (my own JS+WebGL library) otherwise.

Github is now a subsidiary of the MICROS~1 Spicy Autocomplete division, so I guess it's time to re-up my "LOL Github" I-told-you-so post from 2018, since in those intervening 7 years you have all learned nothing.

Anyway, good luck with that! I hope your migrations go really well.

The fact that Microsoft is reorganizing the management of GitHub, which it purchased in 2018, is not particularly surprising.

The fact that it is being moved into Microsoft's AI operation, though, says a lot about what GitHub is actually for now.

GitHub just got less independent at Microsoft after CEO resignation

Microsoft is bringing GitHub into its AI engineering team. It’s part of an AI shakeup, following the GitHub CEO resigning.

Several people sent me this: Github is no longer an independent company; rather as of today Github is *under* the AI team. As far as I'm concerned, this is an open admission the function of Github is not to host source code, but rather as an intake for Microsoft to *harvest* source code to train their AI.

I guess it always seemed unlikely MS would've paid all that money to altruistically host the open source community. "Oh, I didn't get rich by writing a lot of checks…"

> If I lose my job due to AI, it will be because I used it so much it made me lazy and stupid to the point where another human has to replace me and I become unemployable. I shouldn't invest time in AI. I should invest more time studying new things that interest me.

I tried coding with AI, I became lazy and stupid

Robots won't replace me, but another human probably will.

Frontend devs. Sweeties. Let's talk.

Do you remember the Web in the 90s? I do. My computer today has more RAM than my computer in the 90s had hard disk. My cable modem today can download that amount of data several times over every second.

The web today feels as slow today as it did in the 90s. On a 56k modem.

It's not your fault. I get it. Business demands, shifting frameworks. But engineer to engineer here, I'm really gonna need you to start telling them no. It's getting embarrassing.

I continue to want thicker laptops with visible screws and user replaceable everything and I'm not joking.
