Bonne année! Happy New Year! Here’s my topical French Canadian folklore print I made for #FolktaleWeek2025: La Chasse-galerie!

This hand-carved, hand-printed 11” x 14” lino block print on lovely Japanese paper illustrates the famous French Canadian folktale of the Chasse-galerie, or the Flying Canoe. The tale tells of some hardworking voyageurs in their timber camp, 🧵

Day 24 of #artAdventCalendar is The Maiden of the Dawn & the Firebird I made for #FolktaleWeek2025

A Prince is prophesied to fly away on the Firebird on his 15th birthday & marry the Maiden of the Dawn. So the King imprisons him in a luxurious tower prison & holds an elaborate 15th birthday, without him.

Frustrated, the Prince escaped by the window to the garden, unobserved by the guards enjoying the festival. 🧵

Better late than never so... my #FolktaleWeek2025 entries all gathered together, telling the story of the night the Princess Moon learned how to swim.

When the sun begins to push its rays through the windows and dawn arrives, it’s time for Nasty and her friends to go to bed.
During the day, the library is far too noisy anyway, and the humans get terribly excited whenever they see her.
Nasty is a little star in her library. After all, everyone knows her name.
Whenever they catch a glimpse of her, they shout with delight: “NASTY!!!”

End of #folktaleweek2025 😊

For Day 6 of #FolktaleWeek2025 prompt #FolktaleWeekStorm:

In the Gaelic mythology of Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man, the divine old woman, or hag, created the landscape itself and the storms and weather of winter. Known by many names, she is the Cailleach (literally the old woman or hag) or Cailleach Bhéarra in Ireland, she is Cailleach Bheurra, or The Hag of Beara or Beira, Queen of Winter 🧵

#folktaleweek2025 day 6 storm

Most of the tales she reads are about adventures and wild storms. The one raging outside isn’t so bad especially not when Nasty can stay here, safe and warm, with her friends. Then she likes to imagine a sky heavy with clouds, with leaves and lightning swirling across it. Her mind always spins the wildest tales.

#FolkTaleWeek Day 4: Book

4. Strolling around, feet on soft sand, has its advantages. You see lots of new things, and if your lucky, you can even find a long lost treasure.
"Ouch!" the Fallen Star tripped over something flat and hard. "Who can have left this here? Reckless, that's who."
