EU Fertiliser Action Plan released. Organic recognised, but measures to counter synthetic inputs dependency insufficient | IFOAM Organics Europe
Today, the European Commission unveiled its Fertiliser Action Plan. IFOAM Organics Europe welcomes the recognition of organic farming as a nutrient-efficient farming system that can help reduce reliance on synthetic fertilisers, improve natural soil fertility through nutrient cycles and strengthen the resilience of EU agri-food systems. 🌱 At the same time, we caution against weakening the Nitrates Directive under the guise of simplification, as well as measures that risk maintaining long-term dependency on synthetic fertilisers through continued focus on supply diversification and domestic production. A truly resilient food system requires reducing dependency on synthetic fertilisers while investing in healthy soils and agroecological approaches.
