The historic district of Riga, known as "Maskachka," is so named by locals after its main street, Maskavas (Moscow Street). This district is infamous for having been the site of a Jewish ghetto during the occupation. My parents spent their childhood here after WWII, and so did I (although we didn’t live there; I went to school here). Then we moved away, and “Maskachka” became infamous again in the late Soviet era and early 1990s due to crime. We moved back closer to these places in 2018, and since then I’ve sadly watched the neighborhood disappear year by year. The old houses are being destroyed by time and “accidental” fires. The neighborhood is literally vanishing, even though it could have become one of the city’s most interesting historical and tourist destinations. I also visit this place every time I come to Riga, and each time it gives me more and more reason to be sad.
