I would propose a new name for the game: Nepotism Navy Simulator.
Because when you look at how your fleets and single ships act, you can only surmise that every single officer in the entire Navy got to their rank because of nepotism, not skill.
My advise would be to not even touch the game, because it's insidious: In the first hour or two, you're constantly thinking: This is going to be great!
And then the first pirates arrive.

Also seen in this session:
- Fleet ordered to attack pirate base. Two frigates jump in ahead of the fleet, instead of together with it. Get pulverised due to lack of PD cover
- Fleet ordered to attack pirates in another system. Way too late. Still continue to the system long after pirates are gone. Station in their anchorage system gets raided.

Why you shouldn't touch Distant Worlds 2 with a 10-foot pole. That there is one of my colonies. To the north of the planet is a 17 ship sector fleet, fully armed. South of the planet is a single pirate ship.
My fleet has been hanging there, trying to get at the pirate, for several minutes.
Note the messages about the colony having been raided on the right of the screenshot.

Distant Worlds 2: The game you will want to play if you ever wanted to know what a Navy promoting utter incompetents based on who their daddy is looks like.
Hey, the system I just left is getting hit again? Well, tough luck. I will first return to my home base and then - perhaps - return. What do I hear? The pirates are already done raiding the planet? Ah well, no use returning then.
I shudder at the thought of what a real war is going to look like.

Distant Worlds 2 would be one hell of a game. If the automation wasn't so incredibly bad that it feels like your entire admiralty is made up of bumbling fools.
I mean sure, deserting your post and the mining station you were charged with protecting - while it was being attacked - just because you were a bit light on fuel is a choice you can make.
It's also going to be the shortest court martial in naval history.
