In the news, AOL (America Online) is ending its dial-up service. I probably have some relatives still paying for it and don't know it.
I had Sprint as my first one at home in the 90's. Worked fine.
It was tricky putting a Linux computer on dialup. One had to be careful to buy a modem that was known to work. Also, there would be no help from the dialup provider if not running Windows or Mac.
It was exciting the day the Linux box grabbed a dialtone and blasted out the tones. ☎️

AOL ogłosiło oficjalny koniec swojej usługi internetowej dial-up – 30 września 2025 roku symbolicznie zamknie się pewna epoka. To pożegnanie z technologią, która przez 34 lata była drzwiami do internetu dla milionów ludzi. Szczególnie w USA, gdzie jeszcze dekadę temu dial-up ratował tych, którzy nie mieli dostępu do szerokopasmowych łączy.
Dla wielu z nas dźwięk modemu, łączenie przez linię telefoniczną i powolne ładowanie pierwszych stron WWW to wspomnienia z czasów, gdy internet dopiero stawał się częścią codzienności. AOL, pionier tej technologii, zamyka swój rozdział, zostawiając za sobą nostalgię i wspomnienia o początkach cyfrowej rewolucji.
