Today in #UnitedKingdom #HouseOfCommons at around 15:40 there was an urgent question regarding the proscription of #PalestineAction (PA)
I think you can use this link to go back and watch the full almost 90m session, idk this is the first time I'm using this website https://parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/eb4aef10-1aa0-4bfb-bb66-d88d56e7b1af
All answers given by minister of state, the home secretary was in meeting with five eyes according to minister of state
All quotes are paraphrased, quotation marks are not exact quotes but closer to actual quote than surrounding summaries
It seems about 2/3 of the questions were in favour of PA protestors
Q. The proscription is "absurd unworkable unsustainable", will the proscription be reviewed?
A: the govt will do everything that is necesary and proportionate for public safety...
Q. (on UN condemnation of the proscription):
A. PA members displayed intention to commit "serious violence" to opponents, ordinary criminal law wouldnt have been efective against PA
Q. The point of proscription is to deescalate tactics of groups: what steps for de-proscription eventually
A. the decision can be appealed legally, one is underway, the govt will abide by the result
Minister of State agreed with statement "this government is making meaningful action to end the suffering in gaza"
several other MPs called for a review of the terrorism laws, the responses included the following points
ppl "do not fully understand" what PA has done they are violent, been charged with grevious bodily harm (GBH) and actual bodily harm (ABH), police officer were injured with sledgehammer (by PA, informing the proscription decision) & it would be inappropriate to review terrorism laws as there are ongoing legal cases and police investigations
General statements from Minister of state:
10s of thousands protested legally in support of Palestine, banning PA doesn't ban pro palestine protests and is consistent with ECHR freedom of expression
"this govt doesn't look at ideological origin of threat, we protect the public, thats why we proscribed them
the proscription is "necessary and proportionate"
the govt would never interfere with proscribed orgs right to appeal
thanked police for doing their job multiple times, "absolutely shameful assaults on police" "impeccable operation" on saturdays #DefendOurJuries PA #protest
#JeremyCorbyn and #ZarahSultana of #YourParty also made statements:
Jeremy Corbyn: largest number of arrest since act came into force, protestors protesting against arms sales to israel, feel legislation damages peaceful protest, "the minster knows the weight of history is against him" "the situation will get worse and worse" "will the minister review the decision", our history was built on protest and dissent
Minister of State: proscription wasnt rushed, this gov hasnt stood in way of peaceful protest, as a union person he should agree that safety in the workplace is important (referring to charges of ABH and GBH against PA members)
