Direct Democracy and Protest Movements: Towards the Democratic Protagonism of the Working Masses · BG | berlinergazette.de

In the capitalist system, economic processes are separated from democratic oversight, and the concept of a self-regulating market prevails. When the economy determines the living conditions of the majority yet the majority lacks democratic participation in economic decision-making, the legitimacy of democracy becomes a fundamental and often overlooked issue. Against this backdrop, Katarina Peović argues for a democratic protagonism of the working masses in her contribution to the “Deep Democracy” series.

The practice of democracy does not necessarily occur within the institutions that comprise a democratic state. Thus, it is important to examine some of the less obvious moments in the history of democracy-building, particularly in countries like #Ukraine, where the forgotten #miner #strikes of the 1980s + 1990s paved the way for democratization. To mitigate, if not halt, the planetary polycrisis, we must counteract market + state relations by strengthening social relationships. This requires a democratic approach that transcends liberal democracy: https://berlinergazette.de/in-the-ruins-of-progress-repositioning-democracy-as-an-everyday-practice/

Models and practices of #democracy that exclude illiterate people are inherently elitist and contradictory. Consequently, despite its considerable efforts throughout history to provide #workers with primary education, the left’s high democratic aspirations suffer. It is therefore high time to rethink what could connect us in the face of rising disaster nationalism, argues Slave Cubela in his contribution to the #DeepDemocracy series: https://berlinergazette.de/beyond-disaster-nationalism-democratic-movements-must-rethink-territoriality/

As long as the #economy remains outside the realm of democratic control, democracy is intertwined with a destructive, #colonial system that threatens our existence on #Earth

Realizing Democracy: Why We Need to Switch Off the Autopilot and Take Control · BG · berlinergazette.de · EN|DE

We must defend democracy, not as it currently exists, but by making it a reality. As long as the economy remains outside the realm of democratic control, democracy is intertwined with a destructive, colonial economic system that threatens our existence on this planet. In his contribution to the “Deep Democracy” series, Lukas Warning argues, that no socio-ecological transformation can occur unless the restructuring of the economy is subject to collective control. A plea for realizing democracy through socialization.

Democratization of Health: What Can We Learn From the Self-Organized Solidarity Clinics in Greece? · BG · berlinergazette.de · EN|DE

The solidarity clinics that emerged during the 2008-2015 crisis protests in Greece left behind experiences of direct democracy and their transformative potential. Like other self-organized projects that emerged during the crisis, the clinics offered people an opportunity to overcome social hardship together. In her contribution to the “Deep Democracy” series, Dilan Köse explores how these experiences may lay the groundwork for future social protests and the formation of direct, democratic alternatives to increasingly hollow liberal-democratic models.

The renewal and realization of democracy, or indeed its democratization, has many names. In 2026, we would like to organize the BG’s annual text series under the title #DeepDemocracy https://berlinergazette.de/deep-democracy-bg-annual-text-series-2026-call-for-papers/

The renewal and realization of democracy, or indeed its democratization, has many names: true democracy, direct democracy, radical democracy, council democracy, economic democracy, and many more. In 2026, we would like to organize the BG’s annual text series under the title “Deep Democracy,” building on our previous annual text series, such as “Pluriverse of Peace” (2025), “Kin City” (2024), “Allied Grounds” (2023), and “After Extractivism” (2022), which focused on critical inquiries of the planetary polycrisis. We outline the concept below. Information on how to submit contributions can be found at the bottom.
