"In February, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pledged $1 billion toward those long-delayed projects, including $22 million for the Santa Ana Pueblo center. The agency estimates $8 billion is needed to tackle all remaining projects on the 1993 list that, under federal law, must be complete before the IHS can address other major construction needs."

Indian Health Service chips away at construction backlog
The U.S. agency that provides health care to Native Americans has a facilities problem. Buildings in its inventory are decades-old, dilapidated and don't have enough space to care for a growing population. A recent $1 billion pledge from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could help the agency chip away at a construction backlog dating to 1993. But Kennedy says it will take much more — $8 billion — to replace the seven clinics and hospitals still on the list. All are in the Southwest. Congress sets $200 million aside annually for the construction backlog, not nearly enough to keep up.
