Was für Wappler!

Our democracies are under attack by authoritarian tech, tech monopolies, Big Tech corporations that extract enormous amounts of value from the users, manipulate them and is "enshittified" as @pluralistic reminds us.
Our answer is: Democratic Tech -but hey, you ask what's that exactly?
Here's a long article tracking the origins of the term, https://freeknowledge.eu/democratic-technology-building-alternatives-to-techno-auhtoritarianism
TLDR:
Of the different connotations of "democratic tech" we understand it as commons, where a community takes care for the tech they use; it is tech that is under their ownership or control, instead of the tech (and its distant owners) taking control over the community. So we go beyond mere "civic tech" or "democratising access to tech".
I think this is pertinent in this time when our democracies are under attack by so called "authoritarian tech".
#fediverse is at an inflection point.
Either revival and course correction to the original #ActivityPub protocol power and promise. With the potential to #ReimagineSocial.
Or keep current track with fedi-we-have. Be content with a few great and reasonably popular app platforms. Surely some more to come. But with a messy wire protocol that stifles #innovation and isn't future-proof.
#AskFedi do you dare to dream?
This special thought provoker is based on personal reflection and 8 years of #commoning. Deliberately exposed to the inherent unsustainability of the #FOSS movement. Burning privilege by spending my savings.
Goal: 1st-hand experience to learn the #social dynamics that make a #commons tick.
I invite you to a #brainstorm & #ideation ride. To ponder how #fedi can organically evolve. Become unbeatable by #hypercapitalism.

But in an age of #AI who still reads long handcrafted #blogs? Fill in the #poll.
| In the end I more or less read the whole article | |
| I read the article summary, skimmed for highlights | |
| I passed the problem section, read the tech ideas | |
| Meh, skip. Too technical. Too social fluffy. Other |

Benjamin Mako Hill has spent years studying the distinctive social dynamics and governance structures of collaborative websites, from open source software (GNU/Linux), wikis (Wikipedia), collaborative filtering (Reddit) and a range of social media. A noted hacker, activist, and computer science professor at the University of Washington, Hill has come to see that digital commons go through developmental stages, each with its own special needs. Fledging projects need to attract contributors by remaining open and welcoming, for example, while more established collaborative websites need to protect their shared code, curated information, and reputations from outside political and corporate players that attempt to capture their "epistemic legitimacy."
