#Palestine / Loss resilience or adherence to losses as a social glue in Israel

What do you call a group that embraces violence and a lack of regard for human life? Israelis are already using the term โ€œdeath eatersโ€ to describe the religious right, and they have a reason. But this term might apply to a much larger portion of the Israeli population today.

A recent analysis of cultural attitudes toward casualties in the ongoing Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories (aka Israeli-Palestinian โ€œconflictโ€) reveals a significant shift in societal values. The study, focusing on the period surrounding October 2024, identifies the rise of a "loss resilience" ethos, indeed particularly within right-wing and religious Zionist circles.

This new paradigm prioritizes unwavering commitment to the occupation and acceptance of casualties as a necessary cost, often at the expense of previous values emphasizing empathy and questioning the inevitability of loss.

From the paper:

[โ€ฆ] The new ethos of loss resilience engages in a directed debate with two earlier values that provided collective meaning to death in war. The first value, the ethos of self-sacrifice, is a conscious act of a heroic warrior, whose willingness to die glorifies the collective for whom he sacrifices his life. However, the commemoration of soldiers in recent months is almost not dedicated to the glory of the nation, and even ignores the war. Stickers commemorating the fallen in the public space describe the qualities of the fallen as human beings, not as soldiers. At the same time, activity and heroism are attributed mainly to the public's "resilience," which does not question the war policy and the routine of mourning, but rather accepts the unending death of its best sons and daughters.

[โ€ฆ] The second value, sensitivity towards losses in war, is the central value against which the new ethos of resilience rebels. Sensitivity to losses as a shared ethos gained momentum in the 1990s, mainly against the backdrop of the First Lebanon War, and included questioning mourning as an inevitable and unifying experience. Sensitivity to losses united a liberal political camp that promoted peace efforts, and reached its peak three years after the "helicopter disaster," when the IDF withdrew from the security zone (for more on the decline in militarism in those years, see Levy, 2023).

I think we need to revive the term #DeathEaters for a certain shade of politicians. I found it kind of useful during the Johnsonic mishandling of the pandemic. and this new wave idiots will also produce countless avoidable deaths. In many cases intentionally, I suspect.

#Israel / The art of disinformation, lies and the cult of Death Eaters

A senior Israeli official claims that alleged war criminal #Netanyahu deliberately sabotaged a potential ceasefire deal with #Hamas by introducing a new document, known as the "document of clarifications" [ืžืกืžืš ื”ื‘ื”ืจื•ืช], which included changes that would have torpedoed the agreement.

The official alleges that Netanyahu's goal was to make it appear as though Hamas had rejected the deal, when in fact, Israel was the one responsible for its failure. The document, which was presented to Hamas after they had already agreed to most of the terms, included new demands and changes that Hamas was unlikely to accept.

[...] "Netanyahu's trick," said a security source familiar with the details, "is that there is a dispute over who will be defined as 'sick'. Hamas can claim that someone is not sick in their opinion, or not sick enough to be included in the list, and suddenly you're stuck in weeks or months of arguments."

The official claims that Netanyahu's actions were motivated by political considerations and that the document was "stained with the blood" of the six hostages who were subsequently murdered.

The official also criticizes the Israeli military and intelligence leaders for not speaking out against Netanyahu's actions and for allowing the war to continue despite knowing it was unlikely to achieve its goals.

[...] Einav Sengaoker, the mother of the kidnapped Matan, claimed in her testimony to the civil investigation committee that shortly before that, Barnea (head of the "#Mossad") told her that Netanyahu was sabotaging the negotiations for political reasons. Barnea denies having said this, although there are others who are certain that they heard both him and the rest of the negotiating team say similar things, and sometimes even much more blunt.

#Israel / Convicted Duma Murderer Ben-Uliel Granted Transfer to Religious Prison Wing Amid Growing Support

Amiram Ben-Uliel is an Israeli man convicted of murdering three members of the Palestinian Dawabsheh family in a 2015 arson attack in the occupied West Bank. He was sentenced to three life terms plus 20 years for killing 18-month-old Ali Dawabsheh and his parents, and severely injuring their 4-year-old son. His conviction was upheld by Israel's Supreme Court in 2022.

Recently, a crowdfunding campaign raised over 1.2 million NIS to support him, improve his prison conditions and potentially secure his release. Some right-wing Israeli politicians have expressed support for him, with one lawmaker calling him a "holy, righteous man" despite his conviction.

In a new development, Israel's Shin Bet security service has approved Ben-Uliel's transfer to the religious wing of Ayalon Prison, following requests from his lawyer. This decision came after discussions between the Shin Bet's Jewish Division and leading rabbis from the religious Zionist movement who advocated for Ben-Uliel. Notable figures involved in these efforts include Rabbi Yaakov Medan from Gush Etzion and Rabbi Dov Lior, who is the spiritual leader of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Additionally, it was reported in #Haaretz that according to security sources, the Israel Prison Service Commissioner Kobe Yacobi and Ben-Gvir's chief of staff, Chanamel Dorfman, have visited Ben-Uliel in his cell on two separate occasions.โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹

Important stuff from Devi Sridhar on the role of the "scientific advisers" to the mad circus that pretended to govern the UK during #Covid.
