This route probably looks weird to German (why is this not an RE?) and French (What is this weird not-TGV not-TER thing?) eyes, but it makes a lot of sense in our weird organization of passenger rail!

PKP Intercity. Będzie więcej pociągów Kraków – Bielsko-Biała

Od grudnia bieżącego roku na tory wyjadą 4 kolejne pary pociągów PKP Intercity z Krakowa do Bielska-Białej. Trzy z nich zostaną wydłużone aż do Żywca. Dzięki rozszerzeniu oferty między Krakowem a Bielskiem będzie kursować 8 par kursów w dobie.

And last and most: The Ministry of Infrastructure has announced trains are going to reach the west Podlachian town of Łomża, deprived of passenger rail since 1993, this June! …However, the initial offer will not include the promised direct connections to Warsaw. The first #PKPIC route to connect Łomża will run Białystok-Łapy-Łomża (direction change)-Ostrołęka-Szczytno-Olsztyn, instead. There will be 2 pairs a day of those, and also 4 pairs of Polregio trains to Białystok. All these trains will use a new curve in the direction of Białystok being constructed at Śniadowo. The exact timetables are still being constructed and will be announced, well, when PKP PLK announces timetable changes.
The cited reason for the lack of direct connections to Warsaw is twofold: One, PKP IC is still short on Diesel rolling stock, pending the delivery of Newag Impuls EDMUs - the Białystok-Łomża-Olsztyn trains are to be run with ex-Dutch DM90 units rented from SKPL Cargo (which are to be painted in the livery used on PKP IC's Flirt and Dart EMUs as a sign of commitment to long-term usage). Second, capacity is reduced between Ostrołęka and Tłuszcz, a major junction north-east of Warsaw, due to engineering works. W czerwcu po wieloletniej przerwie mają ruszyć pociągi pasażerskie do Łomży. Poznaliśmy właśnie szczegóły planowanej oferty połączeń dalekobieżnych. W pierwszym okresie po wznowieniu przewozów PKP Intercity dowiezie podróżnych do Białegostoku i Olsztyna, a nie – jak zapowiadano wcześniej – do Warszawy. Pociągi do stolicy ruszą z Łomży w przyszłym roku.

#PKPIC will cut stops in Kuźnia Raciborska (a small town of 4600 between Kędzierzyn-Koźle and Racibórz) for some trains. Although the official reason are safety concerns due to the short (~100 m) platforms, and a request to move stop location indicators ~20 m beyond the end of platforms was filed with PKP PLK, the company's press office noted demand is "tiny". Kuźnia sits at a voivodeship border and regional services are provided by the Opole Voivodeship. PKP Intercity ograniczy liczbę postojów w Kuźni Raciborskiej

Narodowy przewoźnik poinformował o zamiarze zmniejszenia liczby pociągów zatrzymujących się na stacji Kuźnia Raciborska na linii Kędzierzyn-Koźle – Chałupki. Tłumaczy to względami bezpieczeństwa. Perony są tam bowiem krótsze niż kierowane na trasę składy.

This map is a remix of Jon Worth's #CrossBorderRail All The Borders map (https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/crossborderrail-all-the-borders_935041), compiled by HaTetsu (https://mastodon.com.pl/@HaTetsu) and should be up-to-date as of January 2026. It was inspired by short discussions of the problems of French rail regionalization which are in some ways even worse than Poland's despite (or because?) the operation being almost all SNCF. I swear it's not a challenge, but the borders are colored according to whether Jon's passed through there as part of the #CrossBorderRail journeys, as on the original. Lines that only existed in wartime are excluded, as may have been a couple minor ones dismantled long ago. Voivodeships and surrounding regions are represented with ISO letter codes where possible, not because they are well known, but because they are easily checked, short, and mostly unambiguous once learned - the exceptions are Czechia and Ukraine which do not use letter codes, for Czechia I used license plate codes prepended with CZ-. Od grudnia ponad dwa razy więcej pociągów regionalnych Łódź – Częstochowa

Łódź i Częstochowę przez Piotrków Trybunalski oraz Radomsko od grudnia będzie łączyło aż 16 par pociągów regionalnych. Połowę z nich obsłuży debiutująca w tej relacji ŁKA, połowę zaś dotychczasowy operator – Polregio – wynika z informacji przekazanych przez łódzki Urząd Marszałkowski. Jednocześnie pociągi Łódź – Częstochowa przez Zduńską Wolę w liczbie dwóch i pół pary będą kursować nadal.

Crazy HaTetsu ideas: Take @[email protected]'s #CrossBorderRail All the borders map and remix it to show 1936 borders. (I swear I'm not trying to issue a challenge) And maybe also 1914 (1910 to capture a similarly pre-war state?) borders. And maybe also imagine Kaiserreich 1936 borders, because at that point why not? (Could use more sources for anything outside of PL, CZ, SK, though)

More in Polish #CrossBorderRail slash #CrossRegionRail: The Lubusz Voivodeship, reeling from another wave of DMU-shortage-related train cancellations, is intensifying efforts to get NEB-run Berlin-Kostrzyn trains extended deeper into Poland - even though train assignments were already prepared for 5 trains to be extended to Gorzów, of which 3 all the way to Krzyż from this year's timetable, it has not happened for unspecified reasons. If confirmed, this would be the second route to be handed off to a neighboring region from 2026 after Głogów-Wschowa-Leszno (the Driewoiwodschappentrein, if you will) which is going to go to Greater Poland's KW.

The cancellations occurred despite Polregio's Lubusz branch having a seemingly comfortable buffer of 10 DMUs/railbuses over the peak daily requirement… Unfortunately, 3 units are down for regular maintenance, 2 are waiting for regular maintenance, 4 are undergoing repairs and 1 is awaiting a custom-made part, leading to the margin shrinking to zero.

Lubuskie: Chcemy pociągów z Berlina do Gorzowa Wlkp. i Krzyża

Samorząd województwa lubuskiego prowadzi rozmowy w sprawie wydłużenia relacji pociągów Berlin – Kostrzyn do Gorzowa Wielkopolskiego i Krzyża. Miałoby to nie tylko ułatwić podróże w relacjach międzynarodowych, ale też pomóc w stabilizacji sytuacji taborowej. Na przełomie czerwca i lipca w związku z brakiem wystarczającej liczby pojazdów spalinowych znów dochodziło do odwołań kursów rozkładowych na liniach niezelektryfikowanych.
