Today (19 February) I’ll give a keynote lecture about “Tactical Publishing” during the Paper Bonds conference at CEFRES - Centre français de recherche en sciences sociales in Prague. Paper Bonds is about “how self-made books and non-commercial bookmaking practices can foster personal connections, shape identities and build communities across Europe and the Middle East”. New research investigates how expressions of gratitude affect perceived social standing. Across multiple studies in workplace, academic, and everyday settings, intense gratitude can shape status judgments in different ways: sometimes elevating the thanker, but when a message focuses primarily on thanks, the sender is seen as lower in status and power. The findings illustrate a trade-off between warmth and perceived agency in social hierarchies.

From a psychology perspective, it demonstrates how emotional cues shape judgments of status and competence beyond the facts of a favor. It also highlights how nonverbal signals and message characteristics influence perceived hierarchy across contexts. The results underscore the nuanced ways gratitude can affect social power dynamics in real world communication.
