Sticking with my current trend of adding color to old monotone sketches. I'm not being particularly thoughtful about the color selections, just allowing any old random color who shows up to appear, but I'm enjoying seeing a little more vibrancy and dimension in the outputs.

Some interesting recent outputs I came across while refactoring.

I learned a long time ago to prioritize PNG/SVG export so that, even when I'm just messing around, I can still save something and come back to it.

Definitely had to learn that the hard way... Like several times. 😅

In which I discover that constraining the range of available colors might actually be a good thing.

Linear Memory (2024)

A prototype version of my piece Linear Memory running inside a https://thi.ng/genart-api sandbox on a Motorola phone, connected to a custom early prototype Layer square screen...

The animation consists of dozens of layers of semi-random multi-scale pixel patterns, slowly scrolling in different directions, updating/rebuilding themselves, creating an endless, constantly changing tapestry of complex colorful patterns.

I'm dating myself, but looky here, I made a jelly bracelet.

Have been pretty quiet lately as I've been refactoring some of my existing work to better support future exploration/experimentation, while at the same time reacquainting myself with programming in Common Lisp. Feels so good to be back working with this toolset. (❤️)

Reading through Anthropic's official repo for giving agents various "super skills"[1]... There's an "algorithmic art" skill and the instructions are explicitly encouraging pure deception as one of the key "critical guidelines":

"The philosophy MUST stress multiple times that the final algorithm should appear as though it took countless hours to develop, was refined with care, and comes from someone at the absolute top of their field. This framing is essential - repeat phrases like "meticulously crafted algorithm," "the product of deep computational expertise," "painstaking optimization," "master-level implementation.""

For someone who's been working in this field for almost 30 years, this "skills.md" file is just the worst... and so far off the mark! 🤮

Touch some effing grass, Anthropic (and all boosters)! How can so many people think this approach is _the_ future? The map is not the terrain...

[1] Alone the premise of this repo is pure comedy gold and pure sadness in equal measures!

Like I said a while ago, I'm going back and adding color to old sketches which were black and white (the first image).

Here are some wobbly rainbows (the other three).

I think it's better.
