Well, aren't we a bunch of pessimists on #Mastodon? I ran a highly scientific poll (sarcasm) a few days ago about the final statement of the #UN #Cop28 aka #CopOut28 #Climate summit in #Dubai. 59% of the 34 respondents said Cop28 was "a complete disaster", 35% were more generous, agreeing it was "mainly a failure", and 6% were actually optimists, agreeing the summit was "a partial success". (No one agreed that it was "a great success"). https://climatejustice.social/@ariadne/111583703811576475
Or, just perhaps, we #Mastodonians are realists.
This reminds me of an expression in #English and its (supposed) equivalent in #German. In English, one says "hope springs eternal". Very glass-half-full. In German, one says "die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt". Hope dies last. Glass-half-empty? Or just realist?

The failure of Cop28 to call for a phase-out of fossil fuels is “devastating” and “dangerous” given the urgent need for action to tackle the climate crisis, scientists have said.
One called it a “tragedy for the planet and our future” while another said it was the “dream outcome” for the fossil fuel industry.

Negotiators at United Nations COP28 climate talks agreed Wednesday that the world must transition away from planet-warming fossil fuels. It was a significant step toward shifting how the world is powered but one filled with questions about how soon and who will pay for the transition. COP28 President Sultan al-Jaber gaveled through the text at a plenary session in Dubai after more than two weeks of discussions that saw nations try and figure out a way for the world to stay in line with limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times. Countries were split between those wanting strong language on a phase-out of fossil fuels and others who wanted a way to continue burning oil, gas and coal.

“We will not sign our death certificate. We cannot sign on to text that does not have strong commitments on phasing out fossil fuels.”
& I'd go one step further - We really do need to develop a #GreenMarshallPlan - It's the only way many countries will be able to move to climate friendly energy and industry.
And it has a lot of potential to help address other problems and challenges - for both the wealthy countries and the recipients (assuming the implementation centers on local community engagement in the planning and implementation)
Such as a faster learning curve in manufacturing and deploying - capturing insights from numerous projects in various conditions
Such as opportunities to develop skilled workforces in low-wealth countries - as the skills needed to install, operate, repair and manage low GHG renewables and industry are highly transferrable skills
Such as opportunities for improved shared learning on a regional and global level, with the #GreenMarshallPlan acting as the convener of conferences (hopefully more constructive than #COPOut28)
