Someone asked me in regards to OS/1337 "why don't you just use mkroot from @landley ?"

https://landley.net/toybox/downloads/binaries/mkroot/latest/

And that is a valid question.

To sum it up:
1. #mkroot for #i486 requires 3MiB of storage and thus is not an option for the 1440kB target size of the current, minimalist system.

2. shure I could instead make a #Syslinux #bootFloppy but that feels like cheating...

3. In the end the idea of OS/1337 is to build a #TUI-based #Desktop that can be built to run on everything.

@neingeist that being said there have been several #BootFloppy if not #Floppy-based #Linux distros.

Besides #tmsrtbt (#TomsRootBoot) and #Floppinux there were #BootFloppies #Debian and Floppy versions of older Linux distros.

@ncommander even did use one of those installs (#Slackware 1.1 from 55 (!!!) 1.440 kB Floppies.

For comparison, Office 4.2 cam on 40 - WITH (!) ClipArts and #Windows 3.11 on 4.

Whilst I work on #OS1337's #MinimumViableProduct aka. #CORE / #FloppyEdition, I'm thinking about the other, more featureful versions.

Besides a #BootFloppy to launch a #CDROM version there are a lot of tools I'd love to support:

1. a Package Manager so people can just install & update shit easily:

2. Good default Configs for a System like NTP & DNS Servers unless those are being offered per DHCP.

@JohannessNilsson but once the "minimal 1440kB FDD SSH Client" version of OS/1337 is completed and working, I do plan to look at a "#BootFloppy" option to launch a more useable #Linux from #CDROM or #USB...

Not shure if it can support that #ISA-#USB adapter which seems to mask itself as a "hard drive w/ controller" tho...
