@Yuki @OS1337 @bjornsdottirs no need to go beyond 1440kB when using mlb instead of #syslinux (which wastes 200kB on it's own!)

  • Also including the #initramfs into the #Kernel can save more due to better compression than two seperate files.

Needless to say the core idea is to be a continuation of #tmsrtbt and a "minimalist #linux distro" as in "#SSH #Terminal #Firmware"...

@DavittoKun @landley One of many goals...

The core goal is to build a clean slate of a minimalist Linux that can then be used as basis for a lot of projects.

Because whilst things could be done with a @Raspberry_Pi & #RaspberryPiOS, having to ship over a quarter gigabyte of a minimalist Debian feels excessive.

Also it's about having some good replacement for #tmsrtbt that isn't just a #TechDemo like #Floppinux, which @w84death did and evidenced that it's perfectly possible to do so...

@landley @SweetAIBelle tbh, #tmsrtbt is one of the inspirations for OS/1337 - alongside #Floppinux...

Granted, #Dropbear and (tiny-) #curl / #wget are more versatile applications for me than #vi cuz a bootable #Floppy from which I could download everything that can't fit on it is an acceptable compromise as I can't defy gravity or rather the "sonic wall" that is the 1.440kB a 3,5" FDD have.

Ideally I'd even be able to fit on a 1.200kB 5,25" but not necessarily.

#OS1337

@HopelessDemigod It's kinda an exercise on #FrugalComputing and #minimalism.

Kinda going from @landley 's #mkroot and working towards building something that is actually useable and not just some EoL tool (i.e.
#tmsrtbt / #TomsRootBoot) or a simple test of feasibility (i.e. #Floppinux which uses #BusyBox instead of #toybox).

Imagine if we'd have OS/1337 in #ROM?
Would not be as fast as #MSDOS but at least useable!

#OS1337

Still the world's fastest booting PC in 2021?

@neingeist that being said there have been several #BootFloppy if not #Floppy-based #Linux distros.

Besides #tmsrtbt (#TomsRootBoot) and #Floppinux there were #BootFloppies #Debian and Floppy versions of older Linux distros.

@ncommander even did use one of those installs (#Slackware 1.1 from 55 (!!!) 1.440 kB Floppies.

For comparison, Office 4.2 cam on 40 - WITH (!) ClipArts and #Windows 3.11 on 4.
