I've spent most of the evening with the second #BlueField 2 DPU I purchased.
It's been a few weeks, and I'd already forgotten lessons from the first.
It's essential to open the console and figure out what version of Linux is already running, i.e. what era it's from.
In this case it was Ubuntu 20.04.
At first every attempt to upgrade the firmware to 24.04 would timeout after about five minutes. Transfer speeds were glacial.
You have to do each interim upgrade to get to the most recent.

The trick to getting the latest #bluefield bfb for Ubuntu running on the Bluefield-2 was loading an older release which must have upgraded the firmware to support the newer version.
Last night I actually went through several release upgrades all the way to Ubuntu 25.10. But for whatever reason that version failed to boot.
So I re-imaged with the vendor's bfb file. Maybe I'll revisit at some point with the custom-built image I made.
Now I'm debating if I want to buy another Bluefield-2 card.
Wusste gar nicht, dass Nvidia auch Netzwerkadapter herstellt...

@karppinen Mellanox/NVIDIA has been trying to shove #BlueField into any customer box they can for years. They're even mandatory in some configurations (e.g. DGX) and there's no shortage of stock.
The "Self-Hosted DPU Controller" mode mentioned in the video has been officially supported with BSP 4.5.0 since December 2023, but customers like #Netflix and us got access to that long before.
Probably Netflix is actually running this right now at 100 Watts, but we have no confirmation.

So while the idea is nothing new and it's quite possible (people have been running Yocto Linux with nginx and Offload directly on #nvidia #Bluefield for a while), those slides do not prove #netflix "can now" do it.
