A ★★★★ review of Queen of Chess (2026)
The documentary itself is decent, but the subject matter is both fascinating and important, especially in a world that embraced The Queen's Gambit. One of the things that annoyed me about that film is its implicit erasure of Judit Polgar and the discrimination she faced and overcame. There was never any need to invent Beth Harmon out of whole cloth when Polgar's story was right there. So I'm glad Netflix decided to make this documentary…and maybe that was only possible because of the popularity of its fictional counterpart. In any event, I hope people embrace this documentary with the same
