A #birder question from a non-ornithologist which came to mind after hearing a #BirdNote segment on #NPR.

The piece reveals that some bird calls change over the years and others have been stable for millennia. One maybe 500kYrs.

That was seemingly deduced based on comparing calls of populations separated at a specific point in their history (prob thru DNA analysis).

So a #question

I was listening to the BirdNote podcast and this episode intrigued me, so I followed the link to their website. The pigeons wearing their cameras are sooo cute! The only thing I could wish for is little fedoras, with teeny tiny press passes tucked into the ribbons.

Be sure to follow the links for photos by the pigeons.

We've heard about a lot of unique gifts, but 78 birds for Christmas takes the cake. That's right, it's been rumored that all of the gifts in "The Twelve Days of Christmas" are birds 🕊️

BirdNote; Twelve Days of Christmas

The Twelve Days of Christmas began as a French love song. The song's age is uncertain, but likely dates to at least the Sixteenth Century. A woman's generous "true love" delivers gifts over the twelve days. The first seven days' gifts are all birds. The "five gold rings" were gold Ring-necked Pheasants. And the partridge in a pear tree was probably the Red-legged Partridge, a cousin to this Gray Partridge.

For a few years I've made my bird photos free for educational and non-commercial use, and I've had a few used in various places. Today I happen to have two sites using them on the same day - and coincidentally, they happen to include two #birds, taken at different times in 2021, sitting on the same fencing by Fresh Pond in Cambridge:

Common yellowthroats: Known to wear masks and sneak around nests to avoid being followed - Cambridge Day

Sounds sneaky, but common yellowthroats are only trying to ensure their babies get born – and the species is one of the most frequent victims of fatal collisions with windows and communication towers or buildings.

This is the first time I've ever heard the song of the #AmericanDipper, so I've known about it most of my life. That is one of the most beautiful bird songs I've ever heard.

I recently finished listening to this short podcast series from BirdNote, Grouse. Recommended!

I wasn't into podcasts until a little more than a year ago, but am rapidly making up for lost time. Except for a few news series that podcast daily (or weekdays), I find that I really enjoy short to middling series, ideally about five to 20 episodes, mostly science, literature, history, and global affairs.
