mostly the same as this name anywhere — fascinated by earth and related-science. So far this is more of a science account and the sfba one is more of a personal account, but there will always be sloppy overlap.

Good morning. 😴⏰☕

I'm up and can feel my brain trying to reboot. There were disjointed dreams last night, flashes of moments that never were and will never be. Yet always just a bit disconcerting as moments that will never finish. That's what dreams are, events that never start and never end. In a dream you are suddenly there, until you are not.

“REM sleep ushers you into a preposterous theater wherein you are treated to a bizarre, highly associative carnival of autobiographical themes.” - Matthew Walker, Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams

Barn Swallow

Out at the lake yesterday swallows were zipping around all over. I tried to get photos of them flying around but just wasn't quick enough. I did manage to get some in the frame but terribly.
out of focus. A barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) finally landed on this powerline long enough for me to snap this picture.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I most likely will not post this one to the gallery. I usually wait a couple of days to see how I feel about it then.

"The Barn Swallow is the most abundant and widely distributed swallow species in the world. It breeds throughout the Northern Hemisphere and winters in much of the Southern Hemisphere." - allaboutbirds.org

Capturing the Flight of Night Herons

“Elegance takes flight: Yellow-Crowned Night Herons (Nyctanassa violacea) soar against a canvas of cerulean skies.” - Copilot with edits

"While not as slender as a typical heron, the Yellow-crowned Night Heron’s smooth purple-gray colors, sharp black-and-white face, and long yellow plumes lend it a touch of elegance. They forage at all hours of the day and night, stalking crustaceans in shallow wetlands and wet fields. Their diet leans heavily on crabs and crayfish, which they catch with a lunge and shake apart, or swallow whole. They’re most common in coastal marshes, barrier islands, and mangroves, but their range extends inland as far as the Midwest." - allaboutbirds.org.

When I was in college, a subject that a teacher spoke of was conspicuous consumption. That is buying and using things of greater cost than is actually needed. It is a flaunting of wealth so that other people see that person's affluence. We mostly all do it I suppose to a certain extent, but some people take it to a new level and will often borrow money to appear affluent. Borrowing money to have stuff that you don't need just to impress someone that you probably don't know, doesn't make any sense. I mean, what's the point? Wanting other people' envy is not a good reason for spending.

“One of the main downsides of having low self-esteem is the attendant desire to have high-priced possessions, especially those with which you can leave your yard.” - Mokokoma Mokhonoana

READ: It’s a pretty big deal when this KEY MESSAGE is in Scientific American. It suggests a bigger tipping point. “We Need to Make Cities Less Car-Dependent: Reducing the need for car travel is better for health, the environment and public safety.”

Ukraine’s major power plant destroyed because air defense had “zero missiles left” - Zelensky

Without the U.S. help, Ukraine stands no chance of prevailing in the war with Russia. Recently, the Russians destroyed the Trypillia thermal power plant precisely because air defense units in the area eventually ran out of surface-to-air missiles to protect the facility from the incoming barrage. — Ukrinform.

Global Stockpile of #Cholera #Vaccine Is Gone as Outbreaks Spread
Doses of cholera vaccine are being given to patients as fast as they are produced and the global stockpile has run completely dry.
Three new vaccine makers are setting up production lines. Current maker's efforts are “heroic” to expand its production.
Yet even with all this, global supply of vaccine that will become available this year will be, at best, a quarter of what is needed. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/11/health/cholera-vaccine-shortage.html

Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi are at the epicenter of the deadliest cholera outbreak in southern Africa in at least a decade. The stockpile of vaccines to limit the disease's spread has run dry.
