What’s happening in Alberta should matter to the whole legal community.Bill 39 threatens the independence of legal funding by shifting costs from government to a law foundation — and adding political approval for major grants. This legislation would undermine community-based legal supports, including Indigenous justice programs and public legal education. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Alberta who are speaking out to protect access to justice.Learn more: action.albertalawfoundation.org

Bill 39 should be a wake-up call for Alberta’s legal community. It proposes adding political control over major grants, and cuts funding for Legal Aid—push the burden to the Alberta Law Foundation. This isn’t about efficiencies. It’s about who decides how legal services are funded, and who gets left out when those decisions are politicized. We have a responsibility to speak out.Contact your MLA: action.albertalawfoundation.org

via Alberta Law Foundation:

Reconciliation includes investing in Indigenous justice.Bill 39 risks cutting off the funding for legal services that have been built by and for Indigenous people in Alberta. These programs are not political, they are necessary.Giving government the power to veto major legal grants will make it harder for Indigenous organizations to lead change. This isn’t the path forward. We urge the province to listen to those raising their voices for access to justice and to honour its responsibilities.Contact your MLA and speak up: action.albertalawfoundation.org

@anyGould @Crispius I just wanted to follow up on this thread about the Foundation.

There are phone numbers to relevant Ministers, along with further information about Bill 39, what has been cut, and what areas are impacted. There's also the Foundation's response.

For Albertans, please read and pass along.

Even if you feel you are not directly effected by these cuts and are not a direct user of these services, consider from an economic point of view that these services are public goods. They often generate a lot of benefits that extend beyond the direct users of these services.

Should you be of the camp that those benefits are still a live issue, they're carefully monitored - some of which are provided by volunteers even.

I'd say these services are like fire alarms that speak to the overall health for social safety. The UCP are taking them down. The public won't know something's terrifyingly wrong until it's too late.

Speak Up Against Bill 39

For over 50 years, the Alberta Law Foundation has strategically managed resources to advance Access to Justice in the province. In that approach, the Foundation has worked closely with organizations, reviewing and developing grant applications to ensure funds distributed to agencies support effective work and meaningfully support Access to Justice for individuals across Alberta. In 2025, the Government of Alberta passed Bill 39, granting the Minister authority over all Foundation grants that exceeded $250,000.

Just got off a call with the Alliance for a Liveable Ontario. Everyone involved knows we can’t afford to waste any time going backwards on climate, food sovereignty, health, biodiversity or any other social/ enviro determinants of health. Alliance members are fighting back because we can’t sit on our hands hoping for a govt who will do what it takes to protect local and planetary health. We need to demand it of our representatives now. www.liveableontario.ca #bill23 #bill39 #greenbelt #ontario
Thank you @acoyne for calling #bill39 a “cockamamie” bill that subverts democracy on the @cbcnews At Issue panel tonight! Way to call out Premier Ford and Mayor Tory for subverting our democracy. #onpoli #topoli

Shameful: Premier Ford & Mayor Tory undermining democracy in TO with #Bill39, allowing the mayor to win votes with support of only 1/3 of City Council.

Majority rule is a key part of democracy.

Progress Toronto on Instagram: "Big news! After thousands of people took action over the last few weeks, a majority of Toronto City Council has formally voted to oppose Bill 39 and committed to upholding the fundamental principle of democracy - that decisions are made by a majority of councillors and not the minority rule proposed by Mayor Tory. In fact, when many city councillors spoke at council today they referenced your emails and calls to them opposing Bill 39. Councillors across the political spectrum spoke about them. For many, their decision was made because they heard from so many of you. In only weeks we went from six councillors on the record opposed to Bill 39 to ultimately 20 voting to uphold majority rule at council. This was after 9,000 people signed our petition online and in person. Thanks to volunteers, we knocked on over 2,000 doors in key wards in only a week, talking to residents across the city about their voice and local democracy. And that is why upholding democracy matters. Your voice and democratic power matters. When councillors ignore the needs of people in our city, we work hard in elections to get progressive candidates elected instead, like the five new progressive city councillors elected just this October. Councillor Amber Morley moved the motion to call on the Province to repeal Bill 39 and Councillor Alejandra Bravo moved the motion to uphold city council’s commitment to the principle of democracy that the majority have the right to decide and the minority have the right to be heard. December 8, the Province passed Bill 39 and the mayor has to indicate in advance before he is going to put forward a by-law and use the minority vote powers. That means it will be the mayor’s choice to use this power and now, thanks to everyone who took action it is very unlikely that the mayor will try to use these powers. We will keep the pressure on to prevent the use of minority rule and ultimately repeal this bill. We need our elected officials to fix Toronto and build a city for all. To do that, we need to include the voices of people and make sure your voice counts. With the city budget around the corner we will continue to fight for a more democratic and just city"

@KWT Thank you for this! I've emailed the Mayor to tell him that I care about local democracy and would love to talk to him about Bill 39.

And I've set up a tool that makes it easy for anyone else to do the same: https://you.leadnow.ca/petitions/tell-john-tory-we-care-about-democracy-at-city-hall

Tell John Tory: We Care About Democracy at City Hall!

Bill 39 is a provincial bill that gives Mayor Tory the ability to pass motions with just 1/3 of the Council - a power of minority rule that is an affront to every instinct of democracy. Yesterday, John Tory claimed that "nobody" talks to him about Bill 39.

So, I set up a tool that makes it really easy to email him about Bill 39.

Let's show our Mayor that he's wrong, shall we?
