Deja vu, but worse: ER docs say government action hasn't matched crisis - Medicine Hat News

[email protected] After a year of crisis-level strain in Alberta’s emergency rooms, longtime physicians say they’ve been here before. This time however, they say government is not co-operating with frontline leaders. At the province’s 16 biggest hospitals, the median time to wait for a bed has jumped more than 10 hours since 2022. Everything Canadian that Albertans will be able to keep after separating, according to Alberta Separatists

Albertan separatists insist that leaving Canada won’t exclude them from keeping some residual benefits of being Canadian. Here is the list they propose: 1. passports 2. currency 3. smugness 4. those little flags we put on backpacks when we travel so people know we’re not American (2 per person) 5. the obligation to say thank […]

It's the final weekend for signing the #WaterNotCoal petition. Many locations are available across #Alberta. Let's push this sucker well over the 178,000 so #coal proponents finally get the idea that Alberta will not tolerate more coal production. Please boost and remind your friends time is running out!

Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation is calling for a federal environmental impact assessment on Kevin O’Leary’s Wonder Valley project after a study suggests the 9 GW data centre and power plant could release massive amounts of heat in an area already struggling with drought.

The scientist who did the study called the new class of hyperscale AI data centres “Gigascale AI Smelters, smelting data and material strip-mined from people and planet.”

The report was released just as the first Wonder Valley open house was held near Grande Prairie and dozens of people showed up with questions and concerns.

The project was announced in December of 2024 but has been stalled since then. Now, it appears to be moving forward, despite concerns of local First Nations.

Read more about this AI mega-project that's the size of 130 West Edmonton Malls in my breaking news story for The Energy Mix.

'The Species at Risk Act was passed in 2002 to protect species like the southern residents and to meet Canada’s commitments to protect biodiversity. No government since then has tried to weaken it' ... until now.

'To achieve the Act’s purposes of preventing extinction and providing for recovery, [the Species at Risk Act] prevents a minister issuing a permit for a project or activity that will jeopardize a species very survival or its ability to recover.'

Mark Carney is trying to change that.

'Carving out an exemption to allow extinction would copy a feature of the U.S. Endangered Species Act, where a committee nicknamed the “God squad” can override extinction protections. Recently, under U.S. President Trump, the “God squad” authorized risking the extinction of rare whale and sea turtles for oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.'

"Trading oil for orcas is a bargain Canada can't afford"

"If the [Species at Risk] Act is weakened to allow risk to this iconic West Coast population, no species, from caribou to monarch butterflies, will be safe.... It’s not too late to demand a path forward that preserves our natural heritage"

Opinion: Trading oil for orcas is a bargain Canada can't afford

Weakening species protections would put southern resident whales on path toward extinction in exchange for short-lived economic benefit.

A tug boat spill causes immense damage on BC coast, yet Alberta argues for oil tankers?

Heiltsuk Nation reaches $12.2M settlement with company involved in 2016 tugboat fuel spill

"In October 2016, the United States owned tug Nathan E. Stewart ran aground in the Seaforth Channel near Bella Bella, B.C.

An estimated 110,000 litres of diesel and another 2,000 litres of lubricants were spilled into Qvúqvái, an important area for harvesting in the nation’s territory.

Chief Marilyn Slett said the nation is still waiting for compensation and recovery work to begin, with over $23 million in estimated recovery costs.

The spill shows maritime laws covering oil spills were made without considering Indigenous Peoples and without a mechanism for compensating them for their cultural losses, she said.

The spill threatened dozens of species harvested in the area, including manila clam beds that provided income of up to $200,000 per year for the community, according to Haíɫzaqv.
