Unpaid Subcontractors for Recovery Centres Say UCP Abandoned Them | The Tyee

One says he faces bankruptcy as publicly funded projects are stalled by a tangled legal fight.

Canadians may be witnessing one of the greatest corruption scandals to rock a province in generations. From the mind boggling dollar figures, to the depth of the group alleged behind the corruption, the scandal touches every man, woman, and child of Alberta.

CorruptCare originally referred to allegations of a cluster of procurement contracts involving AHS and a number of UCP members in relation to Tylenot, bad PPE, and some suspicious bids for chartered surgical facilities. And, now, the scandal continues to expand to construction contracts in relation to the recovery centres at the heart of the UCP’s forced treatment programming (that I dub Residential Schools 2.0).

The Tyee’s Charles Rusnell brings us the deep dive into the allegations between the Semashkewiches, Sam Mraiche, Sam Jaber, Jitendra Prasad, Mike Eldassouki, Aaron Barner, and others. As always, the article itself deserves a read, and I’ll leave some highlights below.

The controversial Alberta businessman denies allegations he strong-armed a firm building publicly funded treatment centres.

Charles Rusnell continues to do some of the best investigative journalism out there.

“If you’re in construction like we are, it is a huge disappointment to know that our leadership would just give away our money for what were worthy projects, and then wash their hands of it when they’re not completed and when hard-working Albertans are not paid."

“It is egregious and we just can’t trust leadership that doesn’t have the gumption to enforce accountability and to enforce the monitoring of taxpayers’ money to ensure that it is being used in the manner that was intended."

The Board Chair of Alberta’s Energy Regulator (AEC) has been personally involved in trying to arrange a meeting to discuss an ethics complaint against AEC board director David Yager, a special advisor to Premier Danielle Smith.

It has not been going well.

From banning a particular lawyer, refusing a virtual meeting, and disallowing a written record of the in-person meeting, the process is on hold. The AER denies there was an off-the-record demand, but doesn’t deny it rejected a virtual meeting.

Dwight Popowich just wants the regulator to follow its own policy and procedure for dealing with complaints.

Alberta Landowner Alleges ‘Mafia-Style’ Meeting Demands as Energy Regulator’s Ethics Investigation Stalls

Dwight Popowich and legal group Ecojustice are seeking an ethics investigation into AER director David Yager over alleged conflicts of interest. They say the regulator’s demand for an unrecorded meeting has stalled the process, a claim the AER denies.

This one is done and dusted...watch for it in the next Energy Mix digest which is sent out overnight.

With everything else going on, I'm not sure people are paying attention to what the Alberta Energy Regulator is up to...but they probably should be since Ottawa is proposing to offload more regulatory responsibilities to the province.

Expect less federal impact assessment, if the proposed cooperation agreement with Alberta gets the go ahead.

You can have your say until the end of the month!

The UCP government of Alberta is closing another round of supervised consumption sites citing “public safety” … demonstrating that they don’t consider drug users members of the public.

Closing drug consumption site will move overdoses onto Calgary streets, health experts fear | CBC News

Nearly five years after first announcing its plans to close the supervised consumption site at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre, the Alberta government set a date to close the site later this year and replace it with services more focused on recovery and treatment.

Perhaps the most important episode of Alberta Unbound we’ve ever recorded. How should we respond to those 9 nasty questions? https://www.podbean.com/ei/pb-tfx3t-1a7c4d3 #ableg #abpoli #AlbertaUnbound #SenateofCanada #cdnpoli
Just Say No: 9 questions, 5 voices

Political scientists Melanee Thomas and Yasmeen Abu-Laben, political strategists Ken Boessenkool and Zain Velji, and constitutional lawyer Patricia Paradis, dive into the nine referendum questions and how Albertans should respond. Here are the nine referendum questions below:  1. Do you support the Government of Alberta taking increased control over immigration for the purposes of decreasing immigration to more sustainable levels, prioritizing economic migration and giving Albertans first priority on new employment opportunities? 2. Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law mandating that only Canadian citizens, permanent residents and individuals with an Alberta-approved immigration status will be eligible for provincially funded programs, such as health care, education and other social services? 3. Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for social support programs as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring all individuals with a non-permanent legal immigration status to reside in Alberta for at least 12 months before qualifying for any provincially funded social support programs? 4. Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for public health care and education as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta charging a reasonable fee or premium to individuals with a non-permanent immigration status living in Alberta for their and their family’s use of the health care and education systems? 5. Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring individuals to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate, or citizenship card, to vote in an Alberta provincial election? 6. Have provincial governments, and not the federal government, select the justices appointed to provincial King’s Bench and Appeal courts? 7. Abolish the unelected federal Senate? 8. Allow provinces to opt out of federal programs that intrude on provincial jurisdiction such as health care, education, and social services, without a province losing any of the associated federal funding for use in its social programs? 9. Better protect provincial rights from federal interference by giving a province’s laws dealing with provincial or shared areas of constitutional jurisdiction priority over federal laws when the province’s laws and federal laws conflict?
