The Accidental Apple
The McIntosh apple wasn't bred; it was found. Around 1811, farmer John McIntosh discovered a single, unique seedling on his property in Dundas County, Ontario. All McIntosh apples in existence are genetic clones, propagated through grafts from that one original tree. That parent tree produced fruit for almost 100 years before it finally fell in 1910.
