Many people are discovering that their tech employer has newly strong opinions about what constitutes a cost center, and that they are one. I've long argued that if you're not selling things to customers for more than they cost, you're a cost center. Now, tech companies generally fight me on this, and engineers in particular, arguing that without engineering there is nothing to sell. This is true, but infinite recursion lurks: Without finance, there is no engineering. Without hr, etc.
I was probably just not made for politics. Scale-up companies and #BigCo are great for those who excel at politics.
