In this article, I discuss and reprint a 1923 Independence Day oration by Reverend Charles W. Lyons, a Jesuit priest who was notable for serving as the President of four different colleges. His speech, titled "The American Mind," examined the famous phrase from an 1825 letter by Thomas Jefferson.

Robert Morris, the wealthiest man in the colonies (just ahead of George Washington), put his business interests on the line to join the Revolution. After the British Navy seized most of his shipping fleet, he humbly declined to state the exact amount of money he lost, for it might sound like bragging. His quip amused me - so I turned it into a short article.
