Within the relatively infertile soils of the Amazon Basin are patches of "dark earth," or terra preta, which have higher carbon, more nutrients, and larger microbial communities. Plants grow much faster in these soils. Archaeological evidence suggests that these soils were deliberately created by indigenous people starting as far back as 5,000 years ago.
