As a full-time occupation of its own there are not many #synthetists.
In #SciFi it crops up in #StandOnZanzibar by #JohnBrunner and #RiteOfPassage by #AlexeiPanshin the latter pointed out the need for another discipline, #Ordinology which I suppose is a blend of #library science and computation.

Reminds me of #AlexeiPanshin 's ruminations on heroes and spear carriers, and how each spear carrier might believe they were the hero and each hero find they were a spear carrier during the narrative.

One of the cornerstones of 1950's SF was the Heinlein Juvenile, a series of a dozen young adult science fiction coming-of-age novels written by Robert Heinlein. Authors who grew up on them have attempted to reproduce them, since. None but Panshin have gotten it exactly right. /1
