#TerryBrooks is retiring and passing the torch for Shannara to live on with a new author taking the reigns. Despite how deritivee the Shannara series when I was a around 10, shortly after I read Narnia and Lord of the Rings myself for the first time. It was a formative influence on me as a #fantasy literature fan and that has ensured it will always be dear to me.
There are still some standouts in the series too, I think his Word and the Void trilogy was the most creative thing he's ever done and remains a masterpiece. Meanwhile, The Genesis of Shannara remains simply the most fun I've had with any part of the series. Especially as the post apocalyptic bridge between The Word and the Void and Shannara proper. It didn’t hurt that it was finally the confirmation that they were connected and took place in the the universe and time I suspected all along but hadn’t yet been confirmed.
Over the years, many newer authors have surpassed the series in epic fantasy in my view and there were certainly missteps along the way. The end of the timeline, for instance, fell completely flat for me. Nevertheless it's quite an accomplishment and deserves to be celebrated for the influence on the genre and in helping to create or cement many other fantasy readers like myself.
Congrats to Terry, well done and I look forward to seeing where Delilah Dawson takes the world of Shannara going forward, not to mention familiarizing myself with her other work.
I do Shawn Speakman was at least offered the opportunity as author in his own right and has been central to the fandom as the a continuity editor for the quite a while and run both Terry's site and the Shannara subreddit.
