I started reading Terry Brooks' new novel, Galaphile, this morning. On the weekend he announced it will be the last novel he will write and that a new author, Delilah S. Dawson, will finish out the trilogy this book begins.

It feels strange to be reading a new book by him for the last time. My father had his books on a shelf while I was growing up and I was drawn in by the covers before I sat down to read them. I read every book he released over the years and some of them are still favorites of mine. He's probably the writer I've read the most novels by in my life.

I met Terry once, when he did a reading and signing at a local university. He was very friendly and asked me what I had been reading lately. When I mentioned Charles de Lint his eyes lit up and he mentioned how very nice his interactions with Charles had been.

#TerryBrooks is retiring and passing the torch for Shannara to live on with a new author taking the reigns. Despite how deritivee the Shannara series when I was a around 10, shortly after I read Narnia and Lord of the Rings myself for the first time. It was a formative influence on me as a #fantasy literature fan and that has ensured it will always be dear to me.

There are still some standouts in the series too, I think his Word and the Void trilogy was the most creative thing he's ever done and remains a masterpiece. Meanwhile, The Genesis of Shannara remains simply the most fun I've had with any part of the series. Especially as the post apocalyptic bridge between The Word and the Void and Shannara proper. It didn’t hurt that it was finally the confirmation that they were connected and took place in the the universe and time I suspected all along but hadn’t yet been confirmed.

Over the years, many newer authors have surpassed the series in epic fantasy in my view and there were certainly missteps along the way. The end of the timeline, for instance, fell completely flat for me. Nevertheless it's quite an accomplishment and deserves to be celebrated for the influence on the genre and in helping to create or cement many other fantasy readers like myself.

Congrats to Terry, well done and I look forward to seeing where Delilah Dawson takes the world of Shannara going forward, not to mention familiarizing myself with her other work.

I do Shawn Speakman was at least offered the opportunity as author in his own right and has been central to the fandom as the a continuity editor for the quite a while and run both Terry's site and the Shannara subreddit.

Acclaimed fantasy author Terry Brooks announces surprise retirement, and passes Shannara series to Delilah S. Dawson

Dawson was born in the same year as the first Shannara novel, and she'll take over the fantasy line after Brooks' final release coming March 11.

A surprise announcement today from my favorite living fantasy author, but I respect his decision. He’s more than earned the opportunity to step back, and it’s interesting to see that he’s passing on the chance for more Shannara stories in the future while he can help with the transition. Be well, Terry, and thank you for so much adventure! ⚔️

Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, complete with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement had promised. But after he purchased it for a million dollars, Ben Holiday discovered that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. Such as the fact that the kingdom was falling into ruin.
