Observations:

With the 7b models (I’ve tried mistral and llama 2) the #A770 does a reasonable job for inferencing performance. A basic summarization task of 3 short product reviews that outputs around 35 tokens takes 3-4 seconds.

When streaming text output (with a prompt like “describe the space race” or “explain the causes of the United States civil war”) in the sample chatbot, the output is a little slower than reading pace, but not much.


It's been a fun holiday technology project

I’ve generally kept the host platform on a relatively stable Ubuntu LTS release. However, in order to potentially support the #A770 card enough to set up the passthrough, I ended up upgrading the host to 22.04.03 LTS.



The suggested kernel parameters (even after changing iommu for AMD) alone in the Intel virtualized setup link weren’t sufficient and I ended up adding a custom entry for /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf to ensure the passthrough driver was bound to the GPU

For the holidays (well during black friday sale week), I thought I'd have some fun by buying an inexpensive GPU (Intel ARC #A770 on sale and start doing some basic Foundation Model work with it. This was going to go into my #Ubuntu server that I had updated a year ago with a Ryzen 9 5900X.

I generally use this system to host VMs of various sizes so it seemed reasonable to consider using a passthrough using #vfio-pci. Something like: https://dgpu-docs.intel.com/driver/client/virtualized.html

So far the card works great. Better performant than the 5700xt, no fan noise even when eevee rendering. Oh and no feedback noise in the speakers when rendering :)

Not sure what would need to be done to get the oneapi in cycles goin'. Even installed the first overlay package in silverblue (intel-level-zero) to no effect.

There aren't many reviews of the #A770 Limited Edition, but on every single one testing Hogwarts Legacy (which is a VRAM... hog, heh) it's showing that the 16 gigs and the wider bus of the Intel's GPU bring up a jaw-dropping performance. It's like as if #NVIDIA have finally brain-choked with that much $$ down their throat
