@hosford42 Interesting! I’ve avoided front loading fiber because I’d read it can affect absorption of meds. But I’m certainly willing to try this and see how it changes things.

I got my blood work back from visiting the new doctor. For the first time in my life since being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I might have it in remission. I went from 11.2 to 5.2 in 7 months. The only medication I take for diabetes is Mounjaro (not to be confused with Manjaro), which has also helped with the 50 lbs I have lost this year. Besides the medication, I also associate the improvement with eating better, drinking a lot of water (over 120 oz/day) and moving more.

Optical imaging technique unlocks hidden glycemic history for diabetes and cancer research

A National Taiwan University (NTU) interdisciplinary research team, led by Prof. Chi-Kuang Sun and Prof. Tzung-Dau Wang, has unveiled a optical imaging technique that enables the reconstruction of an individual's historical blood glucose patterns—information that has long been beyond the reach of current medical technology.

@hosford42 Could be high or could be low. But if you have shakes then it’s not “working” because you’re not well regulated.

🩸 Did you know your iron levels could be sabotaging your blood sugar control?
New research shows:

Iron overload = 4-5x higher diabetes risk
Iron deficiency = falsely high A1C readings
Both mess with glucose metabolism

Simple blood test could reveal hidden diabetes risk!

Healthy Blood Sugar Levels
In 2012, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. It really was no big deal at the time, as it was not insulin-dependent and I was able to keep blood sugar levels well under control with minor dietary adjustments. Then in 2020, I had a very dangerous spike, like 15.4 #A1C and blood sugar levels of 584. I determined that this was mainly caused by my huge intake of GatorAde, which I had thought could help with my electrolytes. Once I corrected, I was able to get things back to a manageable level pretty quickly. This was also the time that the Libre censor entered my life. Things were mostly okay, until now. For the past while now my blood sugar levels have spiked, and nothing I’ve tried to bring it down has worked. My latest A1C is dramatically higher than the one six months ago. I’ve been dealing with this all day today. I have now been through the cycles of disbelief and rage, and I’m now working on acceptance. I have learned that it is possible for Type 2 to turn into Type 1, and based on what I see I strongly suspect that is what has happened. Almost certainly insulin is in my future, as the usual diabetes meds are too rich for my blood on my current Part D plan. I’ve grown to think this isn’t the end of the world. I’ve made lifestyle changes before, I can do it again. I can’t promise the rage won’t resurface at times, but now I’m reasonably certain all will be mostly well.

Interesting observation for my own posterity... I had a good #A1C at the latest check-up (6.7 IIRC). The doc took me off of glipizide as a result, hoping that just #trulicity would be sufficient. However, now, for the past month, I've been struggling to control my blood sugar. And, when it gets high enough, the effect is... oddly reminiscent of being high. It's not the same effect of course, but... it's close enough for me to notice. Huh. 🤷

I was forcibly reminded that using "lifestyle" to control my type 2 diabetes means exercise (for me, Nordic walking) as well as diet (whole-food non-animal). The diet alone does a lot, but exercise still is needed.

When my walking fell off, my A1c went from Nov 2023's 5.3% (normal) to May 2024's 5.7% (pre-diabetic). That scared me, so I became zealous in my walking. I haven't missed a day since Oct 9.

Had a blood test yesterday. A1c was 5.4%. Whew!

For those that don’t know if this is good or not: Depending on the institution, above around 5.6% is abnormally high but not diagnosis threshold for diabetes. 6.5% is diagnosis threshold. Goal for a diabetic, once diagnosed, is to be below 7%. So having 6.3% means I’m achieving goal.

I decided to compare one of those store bought A1c take home tests (ReliOn brand in this case) with a lab A1c test. After my lab blood draws, I came home and used the tester.

ReliOn: 6.5%
Lab: 6.3%

So they are reasonably accurate.

But with a CGM, my GMI was also 6.5%, so not really a good point to using a take home A1c test if you have a CGM.
