Interesting observation for my own posterity... I had a good #A1C at the latest check-up (6.7 IIRC). The doc took me off of glipizide as a result, hoping that just #trulicity would be sufficient. However, now, for the past month, I've been struggling to control my blood sugar. And, when it gets high enough, the effect is... oddly reminiscent of being high. It's not the same effect of course, but... it's close enough for me to notice. Huh. 🤷

I was forcibly reminded that using "lifestyle" to control my type 2 diabetes means exercise (for me, Nordic walking) as well as diet (whole-food non-animal). The diet alone does a lot, but exercise still is needed.

When my walking fell off, my A1c went from Nov 2023's 5.3% (normal) to May 2024's 5.7% (pre-diabetic). That scared me, so I became zealous in my walking. I haven't missed a day since Oct 9.

Had a blood test yesterday. A1c was 5.4%. Whew!

For those that don’t know if this is good or not: Depending on the institution, above around 5.6% is abnormally high but not diagnosis threshold for diabetes. 6.5% is diagnosis threshold. Goal for a diabetic, once diagnosed, is to be below 7%. So having 6.3% means I’m achieving goal.

I decided to compare one of those store bought A1c take home tests (ReliOn brand in this case) with a lab A1c test. After my lab blood draws, I came home and used the tester.

ReliOn: 6.5%
Lab: 6.3%

So they are reasonably accurate.

But with a CGM, my GMI was also 6.5%, so not really a good point to using a take home A1c test if you have a CGM.

@ScienceAlert "In mice", but I use #OliveOil, a lot, and have had quarts of #olives as a major component of my weekly #diet, from meals to snacking.

I have a mid-year #health checkup Thursday so I'm very interested to see what my #A1C level is because I've returned to a more regular diet, including bread, wine, and lower-sugar desserts, since my last checkup in January when my level was 5.5.

I've been on 10/1,000 #Synjardy, from 5/1,000, since then.

🤞🏿

My 24 hour GMI is 5.7. I’ve probably not had an HbA1c below 6.0% since I was a kid. I don’t think I can sustain what granted me this day, it’s probably a fluke. But my recent trends should show an HbA1c between 6.0% and 6.5%.

@Amr1ta accidentally? It's intentional, in my case. ☕ #A1C

I hate that some blood glucose tracking apps will report an estimated A1c as anything called A1c, even estimated. Many apps and tools transitioned to calling this Glucose Management Indicator, or GMI, in order to get away from the confusion of why a measured A1c is different from an estimated A1c.

mySugr appears to be changing their app. Which is a great step, especially for an app designed for logging finger sticks, not CGM data. In fact, they're not even going to call it GMI, apparently. Rather, Diabetic Management Indicator (DMI) because their math and estimates will be way different from a CGM based estimate.

This really needs to be done on all similar apps. There's always inevitably someone asking in one of the communities why their A1c is different between the doctor's office and their app.

To those that may not realize: HbA1c is a measurement of glycated hemoglobin, and the blood panel test will directly test this. GMI, on the other hand, is an estimated A1c based on blood glucose trends through some form of measurement, typically CGM, and depends on the accuracy of the measurement.

At the “feckin’ disaster” stage of #SewingRoomOrganization - after completing a monthlong #DeclutterChallenge2024 in early February, and completing several stalled #UnfinishedObjectProjects, this room was a total tip.

After Friday’s #A1C result came back higher than my doc liked, I’m rearranging everything so the exercise bike can come back in here.

It fits, barely, to the left of the sofa. The “sweat mat” will need to be trimmed, ruining it for resale, unless we swap for a skinnier one.

Ridiculous first world problems, but at least I have solved the mystery of the Sock Burglar.

I had accused @fallingrock of dumping cycling socks on the floor, but left a drawer ajar just now and caught Miss Catty Lavelle red-pawed.

So! Le Chat Maquereau is the culprit!

My #A1C was slightly elevated, but still within the well-controlled range, at 6.7 - hadn’t seen my doctor since April 2021! So she’s going to put me on #Ozempic and I have to go back in to be coached. My niece had great results and lost weight, so it seems like a good option.

I like my doctor, but the 25-30 minute drive to the office is the reason I haven’t seen her in so long. And she’s still concerned about one of my other results, which years ago meant I had to have a painful spinal tap, and turned out to be NOTHING - “individual variation.” So I’ll decline to go down the “come back in next week and 2 weeks later and lather rinse repeat” rabbit hole for needless tests: I’m a mutant, the Hemotologist concluded.

At least now when the subject comes up (I’m not the only T2 diabetic in the family), I can honestly share my A1C.

Will be re-arranging the sewing room to get my indoor training bike set up again, and going back to better eating habits.
