Let me preface this by saying I personally don't agree with what Dead Kennedys are doing now, going around, yknow, the corpo cocksucking etc (only because they always claimed to be against that?) - NOT that Jello is a saint or anything. But I loved them as a kid, those records were HUGE to me and still are, when I hear em.

As a young teen, my friends and I would share and trade albums around, show each other bands. Pretty sure I heard Bedtime for Democracy and Plastic Surgery Disasters from my best friend when I was 13 or 14 in 1993 or 1994. Plastic Surgery Disasters got packed with that other EP later, which was cool, but just the straight PSD LP itself is beauty and perfection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szYMGy4RMGM

Hearing this as a 14 year old kid, well, it's still in my DNA. Bigtime.

Repo Man (Music From Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
1984 Canada pressing

Memory lane, with this one.

One of the many tapes I pilfered from my sister’s then-boyfriend; sometime around 1989.
This thing stayed in Walkman for a very long time, providing a soundtrack to the endless hours spent down at 8-Ball Skate Park, as well as the looong walks home from detention after school.

A controversial take:
I know people love this movie, but I’m not one of them.
It’s one of those “File Under: Films Whose Soundtracks Are Better Than The Actual Film” type of films. I always found it pretty dumb, but have always been thankful for the soundtrack.

DESCENDENTS
Milo Goes To College
2010 U.S. reissue

While my wife gets ready to head out for the day for her birthday, a quick spin for me while I wait.

As I mentioned the last time I posted a Descendents record (I Don’t Want To Grow Up), this band and my early teenage years go hand in hand.

Grow Up, this, and Everything Sucks represent a very special time in my life, and I guess you could say I’m very sentimental about these records. However, I feel that as far as a lot of that simplistic punk from back then goes, Descendents records still sound great to my ears. I can still listen to them and enjoy them at 48, the same way I did when I was a teenager.

Not a single song longer than two minutes and ten seconds.
Absolute bliss, man.

The Decline of Western Civilization (1981)

The Los Angeles punk music scene circa 1980 is the focus of this film. With Alice Bag Band, Black Flag, Catholic Discipline, Circle Jerks, Fear, Germs, and X.

RED KROSS
Red Cross E.P.
2020 U.S. reissue
Special Edition [expanded]

How insane is it that the MacDonald brothers were only 12 and 16 years old when they did this?!

6 really scrappy (but very tuneful) punk rock songs. It’s incredible to think that Neurotica is just six short years away.

In 1981, Red Kross were alongside some legendary California bands; Black Flag, Desendents, Minutemen. And listening to these songs, you become very aware of the importance of RK’s contributions to that early scene.

The bonus tracks here are excellent too, including a live take of “Fun With Connie”; recorded at The Church in Hermosa Beach, birthplace of Black Flag.

I will always prefer the latter Red Kross; excellent records like Phaseshifter, Neurotica, Third Eye, and Show World. However, listening to THIS (and their first two official records) is a fascinating A to B history lesson.

One of the catchiest old punk songs you'll hear by a band you've likely never heard of.
When I was 15 I had this shirt and wore it to near threads so I ended up cutting it and making it a backpatch. I miss that hoodie.

Color me impressed.

Hootenanny from The Replacements is released on April 29, 1983. It's The Mats' second album and, though it has sold less than 100,000 albums, it's still considered one of their best and most important punk/breakneck puck albums of the era.
