Writing a road novel for my PhD & exploring counterculture, mobilities, capitalist realism and fictioning futures in post-millennium Britain.

I’m a writer & filmmaker from NE England. 25 years in practice. Not from an academic background so still bewildered, but thoroughly enjoying it all.

Aiming for a mid-career leap into HE teaching & research.

Not a Trekkie particularly, although I grew up watching the originals. But I adore Strange New Worlds, and television shows don’t get much better than last night’s crossover with Lower Decks. Fun, irreverent, and just downright good humoured from writing through to performance.

I'm a PGR and they moving all our poor staff into our hotdesking space. Just ADSS mind you. The 'not Mickey Mouse' departments seem to be immune

@edgranter Thanks Ed! Really helpful.
@fnafilms get out while you still can! 😂
Let's be clear. Those "low value" degrees are all the degrees were you learn how power works. How knowledge is made. Where hierarchies and ideologies come from. And why all of that is considered "low value" and by whom.

Hey folks! Can you recommend two folks I should follow?

Trying to liven up my timeline to ditch the bird app.

I'll start: I recommend @inquiline for 🔥 #STS and environment content, and @mel_hogan for the best critical takes on "AI" and data.

RT so we can break outta our federated bubbles!

There are some public areas near my office that have been allowed to grow wild. The grass has not been cut and lots of flowers are growing.
The rewilding has made the bees return 😁 🐝🐝🐝

#Academia is my happy place and I feel incredibly lucky to be doing this now, even if I'm running a little late for a career change.

I've grown more in 8 months here, in my little 1970's crumbling corner of the academy, than in 25 years of commercial work. It's like being planted in compost. I've made more new friends, I've gained confidence, I have developed - for the first time - self esteem. I love networking for crying out loud, and I used to shrink to the walls and hide!

I only wish I'd had my #adhd diagnosis 30 years ago when I got kicked out of school and struggled through 9 (!) unfinished FE college courses.

And I now get 30% student discount off my glasses, so that's cool too :)
