Evolutionary geneticist. I study #evolution and #naturalselection, mostly interested in the dynamics of #geneticvariation underlying #complextraits. Postdoc at Joanna Masel's lab. Our new #preprint changes the way we look at an “extinction vortex” in which a small population loses fitness, causing it to become even smaller https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.10.25.620329v1.

My highlight in this screenshot (#science delivery & success is a TEAM effort!), but if you're vaguely involved in #academia +/- #bioinformatics, do have a read and think how it all may apply to you. #academicchatter @academicchatter

The final version of our study on how the SARS-CoV-2 mutational spectrum has shifted during the virus's evolution is published in
@molbioevol: https://academic.oup.com/mbe/advance-article/doi/10.1093/molbev/msad085/7113660

This was a collaboration with Annabel Beichmann,
@richardneher , and Kelley Harris

Below is the summary from when we posted the pre-print: https://mstdn.science/@richardneher/109384088895499391

The main addition in the final version is that we have expanded to more viruses the analysis of the mutational spectrum versus equilibrium nucleotide frequencies.

Evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 mutational spectrum

Abstract. SARS-CoV-2 evolves rapidly in part because of its high mutation rate. Here we examine whether this mutational process itself has changed during viral

Here is a must-read post from children's author Maggie Tokuda-Hall on how Scholastic offered to distribute her book — all she had to do was remove all mention of racism.

Sure, they're banning books in Tennessee and Texas. But it's not just the books that get published and then banned from the library. It's all the books that don't get published in the first place.

Those banning books know publishers like Scholastic pull this cowardly bullshit. It's their game plan.

Scholastic, and a Faustian Bargain — Pretty Ok Maggie

Recently, I got an email with an offer from Scholastic’s Educational Division to license Love in the Library for an AANHPI narratives collection, I was thrilled. If you’ve been in kids’ books for more than ten minutes then you are aware of the staggering reach of Scholastic. And since I’m not publis

I know many are sick of hearing about the ancient work of dead population geneticists like Haldane. But I believe the concepts of reproductive excess, selective deaths, and speed limits to adaptation remain important. Wright-Fisher models were an accident of history. 11/10
Our extensively revised preprint now goes beyond clarifying Haldane’s arguments about the #CostOfSelection / #SubstitutionalLoad / #SelectiveDeaths, it also significantly extends them, and applies the resulting model to data https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.11.01.466728v2

The dual feeling of anxiety and excitement is so strong when I watch my submission going from review process → associate editor → editor-in-chief! Can't wait for the news...
My daughter, who has had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this observation about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen:
Capitalism, the greater the cure, the greater the problem.
