The Kākā, a New Zealand parrot closely related to the Kea. This photo was taken at the Zealania wildlife refuge near Wellington. The foot tags are used in tracking the recovery of the wild population. Although still listed as vulnerable, their numbers have been slowly recovering due to conservation efforts.

Check out the weird eye lids on this Red Eyed Tree Frog. They can cover them while in camouflage mode. Then if there’s a threat they flash their eyes and body coloring, momentarily confusing predators, giving them a chance to leap away. Bright colors like that are often a warning sign of venom or toxicity.

The Echidna of Australia is an evolutionary oddity, the nose of an anteater & spines like a hedgehog. It’s part of an entire order of species that is almost extinct, the monotremes, where the only other family & genus is the platypus. The few remaining species of this order are the only mammals remaining that still lay eggs.
