@mdwray I grew up somewhat similarly in NW Ohio. Still, it’s changed. Liberals, “socialists,”feminists, teachers, scientists, historians, librarians, journalists…the anger is deeper, the targets wider, the vitriol more acrid. I remember when Rush Limbaugh burst onto the scene and even my most ardent conservative friends thought he was little more than a blustering blowhard. 35 years later, they gave him a medal of freedom.
Cleese was spot on, even if today they use the term “woke.” For fascism to take root, empathy must first be eroded, a fact that fascists well know. This assault has been taking place in America since the 80s, accelerated dramatically since the emergence and rise of the right wing media. Our democracy now sits upon thin ice. Vote, resist, never let them win.
