Hi! I’m the same thatandromeda you may know from elsewhere online. Studied #math, taught #Latin to middle school boys, trained as a #librarian, ended up writing #software for a variety of libraries and adjacent organizations. Things I’ve obsessed over include nonprofit governance, #weightlifting, #knitting, #singing, my cats, and #planes (working slowly on my pilot’s license). Married, mom to a teenager, extremely online for a long time. #introduction

Would you like to see something astonishing?

Recently, a friend gave me a gift that she had been working on for almost a year. It was initially a gift for my 40th, but it took longer to make than she anticipated (BIG UNDERSTATEMENT).

It is - I cannot stress this enough - the coolest and most incredible thing I have ever owned, and I am moved beyond words that someone would put the time in to create something this awesome. For me (!!!).

This is the big publication that my department at work has been working on for many months now; I think it's pretty neat.
I am by nature an AI-skeptic, but this work has raised my personal estimation of ML-based vision, language, and action models from "about as important as Kalman filters" to something closer to "about as important as the early Internet."
It also shows that in the robotics field you can build impressive ML models with non-billionaire quantities of in-house, non-scraped data, and that's pretty cool.
Oh, and we're already hard at work on the sequel.
In summary: Do robotics, it's really nifty, especially with my coworkers.

Why #Ao3 was down yesterday:
@chronodm i did not find that opening a new window helped! oyyyyy. (Or...well. Maybe it would have if I just opened a new window instead of closing & reopening terminal entirely???) But I did find that it was happier to accept typeface changes than size changes.
