Heavy drama in the open-source world of...
...Office Document Software.
Nextcloud, originally a fork of ownCloud, has launched Euro-Office, a fork of OnlyOffice (pissing off OnlyOffice). Collabora is weighing in and issuing comments against both OnlyOffice and Euro-Office while, itself, forking Collabora Office Desktop from the Document Foundation's LibreOffice. Document Foundation has now resumed LibreOffice Online which competes against Euro-Office and OnlyOffice.
(I think I've got all that right 😅 Correct me if I haven't! 😂)

Document software may appear boring on its face, but Microsoft Office is a big reason why folks still stay with Microsoft OS and don't (can't...) move to Linux. MS Office 365 is often used as a bridge to allow folks to move to Linux while still using Microsoft products in the browser but that solution still keeps them tied to closed source solutions.
Development of Free and Open Sourced Software (FOSS) office products, both desktop apps and online web apps, is a core and key element to allowing FOSS solutions to thrive - both for individuals and organizations.
This level of drama and fighting is indicative of a lot of effort and attention being thrown into this arena. I'm confident over time it'll settle and different projects will merge back together or at the very least borrow and build upon each's efforts.

Update:
- gave up yesterday because bank cantdo transfers at night apparently (to refill card)
- PayPal still hasn't refunded me
- I straight up can't log in, it just says "we're having trouble confirming it's you" with no further actions available to me
- the support line opens in an hour, but that's only an hour before the discount period ends
- I tried paying with card again and this time it worked!

How hard could it be to buy an #interrail?
- need to reset password because they got hacked
- checkout: something went wrong, please refresh the page - cart is now empty, start over
- card payment: unknown error
- google pay: temporarily unavalable
- paypal: an error occured
- card again: unknown error
- bank: your card has been blocked
- paypal apparently charged my card despite failure
- try to log into paypal, SMS 2FA takes multiple minutes to arrive, times out
- retry: something went wrong
@testman like @eversten already said, I don't think that this is necessarily true.
But on top of this: matrix/element got a *lot* more money pumped into reinventing the wheel. If all that money reached xmpp instead, I'm almost sure we now would have something superior to current matrix and current xmpp alike at our hands.
Also why can't #Element load rooms in the space hierarchically.
As in, list all the top-level spaces first before loading all the rooms that are inside them.
Space is just a room, and it has m.space.child , which is just top space.
So you could easily just display the parsed history of the space first, before recursively loading all the rooms within the first space that it comes across.
Or is this not an issue and people can easily open big spaces like https://matrix.to/#/#gaming-space:matrix.org ?
Is my IP cursed?
- I don't know, because element-desktop either does not take -v or --verbose, --help shows nothing about verbose output, there is no man page. So despite looking at spinning circle, there are no new lines being printed in the terminal. No idea what is going wrong.
- At FOSDEM2026 Matrix State of the Union, Matthew said that "these are all mature clients", while showing a list that contained Nheko and some other not-exactly-feature-complete clients.
- Cinny has no --help or man page.

My opinion on #matrix is slowly turning around. For years I promoted it as the best #FOSS chat protocol that will eventually become the "glue that connects all communication platforms together".
But the frustration with various issues within Matrix ecosystem keeps growing:
- Still can't log into matrix.org account with #Nheko on #Linux. Getting Cloudflare timeout (Error 524). Is my IP cursed?
- Apparently I also timeout when trying to view rooms in some space in Element desktop.
