For the first time in months, I forced myself to get off the f—ing computer and go for a f—ing walk, where I met this little guy...

If at all possible, go outside sometime...

...your brain may stay in its spiral

...you may not notice any beauty

...but you may just encounter a random #cat in the middle of Amish farmland (who has no respect for it not being #Caturday) and be reminded for a moment that life...life is a thing

So some people like to insist that transit is a burden because you have to interact with other people.

With that in mind, let me share one of my stories about transit. I used to take the LIRR train from Northport to NYC in the 90s. I took the same train every day and sat in the same train car and same seat because trains are good. The people on my train became very close.

My train conductor was my wedding photographer.
The people on my train car all helped me pick and gave recommendations where I proposed to my wife. My best man was met on the train. Four more people were in my wedding party. I shared books with my co-riders and every day we talked.

This isn't unique to the train, to LIRR or any particular mode but simply a matter of if you meet and interact with people on a daily basis they become important to you and affect your life. I am a reader and listen to music with headphones most of my transit life yet every time I use transit in my daily life and work I end up making friends and interacting with people.

The people who want to be alone and ride in tiny bubbles that protect them from interaction are missing out on what makes humans good. Society and community are the strengths of the human race. Isolation isn't a positive.

Instead of flowers, I'm thinking about Ginkgo leaves, this valentine's day.

Everyone's rushing to slap together content as quickly as possible, constantly chasing the next viral hit that will make them internet famous.

200 words spread over 25 posts in the viral lottery suddenly seems better than a well-crafted 1,000 word essay.

But fuck it - there is value in slow, thoughtful writing, even just for yourself. The craft of writing deserves patience and care.

nice guy had said in the speech the previous day "I sat across the table from Milosevic and said 'you are a God-damned war criminal and I'll see you in the Hague!'"

@geonz @imajeanpeace excellent idea but sadly not one of my super powers!
@imajeanpeace well said. I struggle to get all these factors in perspective. What am I doing, can I do and how it fits into the wider system? I was depressed to hear of a friend of a relative who is hoping to work for a senior exec at BP. He could work anywhere with his experience. Maybe the salaries are higher to assuage any guilt and doubt in employees minds?

🧵 Unbelievable: Robin Wall Kimmerer's gorgeous book "Braiding Sweetgrass" was published 10 years ago. Unlike other global bestsellers, the book has changed people, woken them up and inspired them to take action. Rosanne Deerchild talks with the author in her podcast Unreserved:

Gentle book, giant impact: 10 years of Braiding Sweetgrass | Unreserved with Rosanna Deerchild | Live Radio | CBC Listen

It was an invitation to reconnect with the land, but Robin Wall Kimmerer's bestselling book ended up being more of a call to action. Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants is now ten years old. Robin tells us how her humble book of essays spread like seeds in the wind around the world, selling more than 1.6 million copies in the US alone. We also hear from readers and friends who were inspired by the book and took action in their own lives to change their relationships with plants, animals, rain drops...and each other!

This dog is almost the same size as me 😁 The sketch started this morning in my favourite cafe and finished later at home. The other pics are of today’s water study from the watercolour course I’m slowly taking. #sketchbook #sketchbookartist #watercolour #drawingeveryday #mastoart
