So itโ€™s just a phone cable chopped in half an a pair of alligator clips attached to each end. Thanks, barbed wire!

So of course the first thing to do is try printing to the other side of the world, to @kalleboo โ€˜s ImageWriter #GlobalTalk
Somehow it all worked over the barbed wire on the first try! And the PowerBook 1400cs really wasnโ€™t built to be used outside ๐Ÿ˜œ #GlobalTalk

Canada rescinds digital services tax to advance broader trade negotiations with the United States

The DST was announced in 2020 to address the fact that many large technology companies operating in Canada may not otherwise pay tax on revenues generated from Canadians. Canadaโ€™s preference has always been a multilateral agreement related to digital services taxation. While Canada was working with international partners, including the United States, on a multilateral agreement that would replace national digital services taxes, the DST was enacted to address the aforementioned taxation gap.

Government of Canada
@the5thColumnist @MatWright cowards. I really can't wait for the day when Trump finally doesn't get whatever he wants but gets what he deserves.
@MatWright @chris Iโ€™d like to think we are playing the long game.
@andymoose @chris I'd like to think so as well, but this is blatant surrender of Canada's sovereignty over tax policy
@MatWright @chris Got to jingle the shiny keys in trumps face, distract while the serious work continues quietly and without fanfare. Carney won with one mandate - if he doesnโ€™t deliver heโ€™s toast. He knows this. It sticks in my craw that the US makes such a big deal over this given that the UK also have a DST, but whatever. You canโ€™t reason with crazy.
@andymoose @chris digital services tax is an actual piece of legislation, signed into law - would need to be repealed by parliament and they don't sit again until the fall

@MatWright
Yes, that's what it states in the release. "...Minister Champagne will soon bring forward legislation to rescind the Digital Services Tax Act."

It does seem like a bit of a dance to keep negotiations moving.

The announcement also expects that the existing tax will be replaced with another agreement that will see Canada get paid. I assume if that doesn't happen the existing model can just as easily be reinstated.

@andymoose @chris

@MatWright @chris Heโ€™s going to renege on whatever deal is struck anyway, then we reintroduce the tax - hopefully after more work has been done to shift trade elsewhere a little more. Keep him happy, keep moving away. Sort of like backing slowly away from a wild animal.
@andymoose @MatWright you're not wrong. feels alot like getting punched in the face by a bully and saying sorry tho.
@chris @MatWright Yeah, I hear ya. This isnโ€™t the ideal scenario for sure.
@MatWright I want Canada to rescind my tax too!
